We are seeking a highly motivated Poultry Scientist to join our existing Poultry Science research team. In this role, one will be responsible for the continuation of the development and implementation of cutting-edge scientific research to improve poultry production, health, and sustainability. These play a critical role in enhancing local, national and global food security and aids in enhancing agricultural economies. The ideal candidate will have a strong background and passion for working with poultry science, animal husbandry, genetics, nutrition, and disease management, and will play a key role in advancing our Poultry Center’s efforts in poultry management and innovation. Hence, a Research Assistant/Associate Professor in Poultry Science will contribute significantly to a relevant and an impactful Poultry Science program that seeks to engage students and other laboratory personnel in collecting and analyzing data related to Poultry based research activities and in developing control strategies to prevent the spread of relevant poultry diseases. Further, he/she will disseminate their research findings at local and national conferences and extension related activities. He/she will be expected to work in field, office and laboratory settings and be willing to handle live birds as well as poultry carcasses.
This position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.
The salary is determined in accordance with the University’s compensation structure and will be commensurate with the candidates’ education and experience, within the assigned salary range for this position.
Responsibilities:
Establish a research program focused on monitoring and applying research on poultry breeding, nutrition, genetics, and management practices; develop and test new strategies to improve poultry health, welfare, and productivity; investigate ways to enhance feed efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and/or improve sustainability in poultry on our University Farm.
Develop biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks and stay up-to-date with the latest scientific advancements and trends in poultry science; and propose new methodologies for improving poultry production systems.
Interdisciplinary collaboration should include veterinarians, nutritionists, geneticists, and farm managers to diagnose and treat poultry diseases and humane poultry farming techniques; acquire external grants to support the impactful and relevant research program through internal and external collaborations.
Establish a program that can be adapted to the local area, serving as a training site for students and communities, and supporting local farmers; teach courses with laboratory exercises in Poultry Science.
Train graduate and undergraduate students in Poultry Science; and publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals, extension bulletins and present at local and national scientific conferences.
Collaborate with extension on outreach activities and participate in and support college-wide events, activities and serve on internal and external committees.
Strengthen Poultry Science research in the CAFNR by enhancing research infrastructure, capabilities, and acquiring research equipment; work closely with PVAMU extension agents in Texas, additionally and attend local townhall meetings to determine and support the mitigation of challenges for local farmers and ranchers.
Participates in college-wide meetings and events. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
Ph.D. in Poultry Science, Animal Science, Veterinary Sciences or related field.
Teaching experience at the college/university level preferred.
Experience with in data analysis tools (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS) and experimental design.
Experience with molecular biology techniques, knowledge of scientific methods and modern laboratory equipment and proficiency in data analysis software, strong understanding of poultry diseases, management practices, and biosecurity protocols.
Experience in a laboratory or research setting.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong publication record and experience in extension programming.
Demonstrate ability to secure research funding.
Effective communication and collaboration skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Publications in peer-reviewed journals, strong statistical analysis skills.
Knowledge of regulatory standards for poultry production, abilities to communicate with a varied workforce.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong attention to detail, familiarity with poultry production systems and ability to conduct fieldwork and manage research projects.
Have clear short-term and long-term research programs addressing major issues in poultry science.
Stay updated on the latest research and innovations related to poultry science.
Expertise in poultry breeding, nutrition, and genetics.
Ability to think critically, solve complex problems, and provide actionable recommendations.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Manage research engagements in Poultry Science using microscopic observations, assays, and other modern laboratory equipment and instruments and demonstrate excellent analytical skills.
Work closely with other scientists and local farmers as part of extension programming.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Poultry Science, Animal Science, Nutrition, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
Advanced Grant Success: Proven success in securing competitive external research funding.
Ability to communicate research clearly to scientists and conferences.
Ability or research expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science usage in Poultry Science
Other Requirements:
Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
