Summary:

Got the journalism bug? The Sonoma (California) Index-Tribune is looking for a full-time general assignment reporter to cover the fascinating people, stories, and issues of the Sonoma Valley. This beautiful and vital part of the Bay Area is famous for its prominent wine industry.

What you will do:

  • Produce daily content (stories, photos, and videos) for our active website

  • Craft in-depth stories on general community trends and topics for our print edition

  • Write and deliver an average of two engaging stories per day

  • Proactively generate original story ideas and contribute to editorial planning

  • Cover breaking news, including local crime and emergencies

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key sources

  • Travel within Sonoma Valley for assignments

  • Collaborate effectively with a close-knit team

What you will bring:

  • A strong sense of urgency, balanced by an unwavering commitment to accuracy, journalistic integrity, and the significance of local news

  • Understanding of social media strategy and how to effectively engage North Bay readers regarding local patterns and trends

  • Experience taking photos and videos

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent experience

  • Two to five years of experience in journalism, covering municipal government, public safety, education, breaking news, general assignment or an equivalent hard news beat

  • Proficiency in data acquisition

  • Fluent in Spanish (preferred)

Benefits and Compensation:

The hourly range is $23.44 - $29.24. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility). Conditions of Employment:

  • Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, in-person training sessions and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed

  • Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
