This position is open for recruitment and fully funded following the 2025 Special Legislative Session.

The role:

Help shape Oregon’s transportation future as a quality control compliance specialist in our Coquille field construction office!  In this role, you will work with the resident engineer and assistant resident engineer to administer, plan and coordinate the materials testing activities for highway construction projects. A day in the life:

  • Interpret contract plans and specifications for roadway and bridge construction projects to ensure compliance.

  • Verify the quality of field-tested materials, including soil, aggregates, concrete and asphalt, to meet specifications.

  • Inspect construction materials and contractor methods to ensure compliance with approved standards.

  • Suspend work or reject materials that do not meet specifications and communicate actions to project staff.

  • Oversee contractors’ quality control programs to ensure they meet required standards.

  • Coordinate and review quality assurance sampling, testing and documentation for project materials.

  • Review and maintain test summaries, material data and payment authorizations for accuracy and completeness.

  • Provide technical expertise and troubleshooting on testing procedures, mix designs and construction quality issues.

  • Prepare correspondence, reports and calculations related to material testing, contract compliance and project estimates.

  • Obtain and maintain required certifications and train ODOT employees in inspection and testing methods at local and statewide levels, establishing and maintaining professional relationships with all contacts.

  • Work in an office and in the field with hybrid work options available, approximately one day a week.

  • Work outdoors is expected at least 50% of the time which may involve exposure to varied terrain, uneven surfaces, all weather conditions, heavy traffic, construction equipment, unstable slopes requiring fall protection, and other hazardous conditions.

Minimum qualifications:

Four years of experience in the field of engineering in construction inspection, materials inspection and/or testing;

OR

A bachelor’s degree in the field of engineering (civil or transportation-related) and one year of engineering technician experience in construction inspection, materials inspection and/or testing;

OR

A bachelor’s degree in the field of engineering (civil or transportation-related) and one year of engineering technician experience in construction inspection, materials inspection and/or testing ;

OR

An equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

Note: Related experience, education, and training can include, but is not limited to biology, chemistry, construction management, forestry, geography, geology, geomatics, mathematics, physics, remote sensing and urban planning.

Special Qualifications:

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid US driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Experience performing inspection or materials testing for highway construction projects.

  • Experience understanding and implementing plans and specifications for highway construction projects.

  • Experience surveying and mapping.

  • Certification in Certified Embankment and Base Technician (CEBT), Certified Density Technician (CDT), Certified Aggregate Technician (CAgT), Quality Control Technician (QCT), Concrete Control Technician (CCT), Certified Asphalt Technician I or II (CAT1, CAT2) or General Construction Inspector (CGCI).
