The Forensic/SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) unit at Cleveland Clinic is staffed by nurses who are specially trained to care for individuals of all ages who have experienced or witnessed any type of violence. This violence may include sexual assault, child abuse, interpersonal violence, elder abuse, or human trafficking.  

This is a PRN position. A caregiver in this role will work between 7:00pm and 3:00am, or 7:00pm and 7:00am. 32 hours per month must be worked.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Collect forensic evidence and/or forensic photography as requested and will maintain a chain of custody for such evidence. 
  • Provide enhanced follow-up services, resources and safety plans that are discussed and implemented before the patient is discharged. 
  • Perform speculum exams and/or pediatric assessments under the supervision of a LIP. 
  • Utilize a thorough knowledge on collecting and managing forensic evidence with a Sexual Assault Exam Collection (SAEC) kit and a Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault kit (DFSA). 
  • Interact and collaborate with medical and nursing staff, law enforcement, prosecutors, protective services, advocates and other agencies as needed. 
  • Provide court testimony as needed. 
  • Participate in an on-call schedule, as determined by SANE coordinator and respond to the designated facility within one hour. 
  • Participate in community awareness programs and professional organizations. 
  • Travel to other Cleveland Clinic Facilities as needed. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Complete an IAFN approved SANE Adolescent/Adult course within 60 days of hire 
  • Complete an IAFN approved SANE Pediatric course within 1 year of hire for incumbents hired after April 1, 2018 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross 
  • Current state licensure as Registered Nurse (RN) 
  • One year of recent RN work experience 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) 
  • Trauma, Women’s Health or Pediatric experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
  • Note: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Gloves, Masks, Gowns as needed.
