Prior Learning Assessment Specialist

This position supports the university’s efforts to expand access to prior learning credit opportunities for students. This role provides operational and student-facing support in the evaluation, processing, and transcription of prior learning credit, including credit by exam, portfolio, industry credentials, direct credit, workforce learning, and other opportunities. This role works closely with the Registrar’s Office, academic departments, and external partners to ensure prior learning credit is articulated accurately and consistently. This position assists with maintaining equivalency databases, supporting the regular review of industry credentials, and updating articulation agreements on GVSU’s website and the Michigan Transfer Network. This role requires excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to helping students achieve their educational and career goals through recognition of prior learning.

Salary & Benefits: Minimum starting salary of $48,000, commensurate with experience.

Primary Duties

Student and Academic Support

  • Assist students in understanding prior learning credit options and processes.
  • Provide guidance on required documentation for credit by exam, portfolio, or credential review.
  • Serve as a frontline contact for student questions related to prior learning credit.

Credit Evaluation and Processing

  • Assist with the processing of prior learning credit, including industry credentials and credit by exam or portfolio submissions.
  • Collaborate with the Registrar’s Office to ensure accurate articulation and transcription of prior learning credit.
  • Maintain internal records of student submissions and outcomes for prior learning credit.

Industry Credential and Equivalency Maintenance

  • Support colleges/units in the regular review of industry credentials for credit articulation.
  • Ensure that approved industry credentials and their corresponding credit equivalencies are accurately updated on GVSU’s website and the Michigan Transfer Network website.
  • Track expiration and renewal of credential agreements to ensure continued accuracy and compliance.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work with academic departments, faculty, and staff to facilitate prior learning assessment processes.
  • Communicate effectively with students, campus units, and external partners to support timely processing of credit.

Administration and Reporting

  • Assist in maintaining institutional prior learning equivalency databases.
  • Support compliance with institutional policies and accreditation standards related to prior learning credit.
  • Provide data and reports to the Director of Prior Learning as requested.

Other Duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in higher education, preferably in a Registrar’s Office or in evaluating prior learning for college credit.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively across units.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Experience with prior learning assessment processes, portfolio review, or credit for industry credentials.
  • Familiarity with student information systems and course articulation tools.
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards related to prior learning credit.
