Retail Technology is responsible for the world leading application of technology and operations across every aspect of CommBank, from innovative product platforms for our customers to essential tools within our business. The Retail Technology team is responsible for technology leadership and capability underpinning CommBank’s retail business.

You will be joining Retail Technology which is responsible for building and supporting the application used by our end customers.

The goal of RT is to provide applications underpinned and enabled by world-class people, process and technology.

Principal Software Engineers play a significant mentoring role in providing design and technical leadership to other members of the engineering team.

As a Principal Engineer embedded in a single cross‑functional squad, you are the crew’s technical leader and hands-on architect. You will own end‑to‑end design and delivery for the crew’s services under the Guidance of the CTL, lead the crew’s migration from on‑prem/Azure to AWS, and uplift reliability, observability, and CI/CD. You’ll work day‑to‑day with the Product and Engineering Manager to shape scope and sequence, lead incident response for the squad, and coach engineers to raise the technical bar—while aligning with platform/security teams to meet shared standards and compliance in a regulated environment.

Note: While AWS is a primary focus, our technology landscape also includes Azure and Copilot Studio (CPS). You will be expected to design and deliver solutions that integrate seamlessly across these platforms, ensuring interoperability, security, and performance in a hybrid cloud environment.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Design solutions for new features and platform work; own the target architecture and docs.
  • Lead the move from on‑prem and Azure to AWS with safe, staged cutovers.
  • Redesign and standardize our experience-layer APIs for web and mobile.
  • Improve reliability: set SLOs, strengthen observability (logs/metrics/traces), and lead incident response.
  • Build and standardize CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and Kubernetes/GitOps; improve developer workflows.
  • Set up secure cloud networking and access (multi-account, VPCs, IAM, KMS, Direct Connect/VPN).
  • Support teams day-to-day: triage issues, fix root causes, and unblock delivery.
  • Coach engineers; run design reviews; promote best practices and reusable patterns.
  • Work with Product, Security, and Ops to make clear, pragmatic trade-offs and align roadmaps.
  • Collaborate on Copilot Studio (CPS) integration and Azure workloads, ensuring compliance and resilience across multi-cloud deployments.

Essential Skills:

  • Experience: 14+ years of industry experience on Familiarity with Developing applications using C# and ASP .NET Core
  • Observability stack: OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog/New Relic
  • Deep experience designing and operating systems on AWS at scale (multi-account, VPC, EKS/ECS, RDS/DynamoDB, S3, KMS, IAM, CloudWatch)
  • Familiarity with Azure services and hybrid cloud strategies.
  • Strong backend engineering in C# ; expertise with API design (REST/gRPC), event-driven architecture, and Kafka
  • Production Kubernetes and containerization experience (Docker, EKS, Helm; ArgoCD or Flux is a plus) and Proven leadership of complex migrations (on‑prem/Azure to AWS) with zero/minimal downtime strategies
  • Hands-on CI/CD and IaC experience (GitHub Actions/GitLab/Azure DevOps; Terraform/CDK/CloudFormation) and Practical SRE experience: SLOs/SLIs, error budgets, alerting, runbooks, incident command
  • Solid security and networking fundamentals: IAM, encryption, VPC design, DNS, load balancers, TLS, WAF
  • Generative AI for Productivity and Adoption: Introduce AI-powered tools for automated code reviews, documentation generation, and design pattern recommendations, while mentoring engineers on integrating these capabilities into workflows and promoting best practices for ethical and secure AI usage.
  • AI-driven API analytics: Monitor API usage patterns and recommend optimisations for performance and reliability. Automate build validation, test prioritisation, and deployment risk analysis using ML algorithms.
  • Data-driven decision-making: Collaborate with product teams to leverage AI insights for roadmap prioritisation and customer experience improvements.
  • Optimise performance with AI: Use AI-based workload forecasting for auto-scaling and cost optimisation in AWS environments.
  • Security automation with AI: Apply AI-powered vulnerability scanning and compliance checks across infrastructure and application layers.AI-based incident response: Deploy intelligent root cause analysis and remediation suggestions during outages.
  • Predictive capacity planning: Use ML models to anticipate infrastructure needs and optimise resource allocation.

Education Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering in Computer Science/Information Technology.
