Bankwest's Technology Division develops and executes all technical change within the organisation ensuring the leverage of technology to deliver the Bankwest strategy. The Division works on a wide variety of technologies and projects with the support of a dedicated team in an Agile methodology. Our team is responsible for the world-leading application of technology and operations across every aspect of the bank – from product platforms for our customers, to essential tools within our business.

As a Principal Engineer, you will play a pivotal role within the Core Product Platform, reporting directly to the Crew Lead. Your primary responsibility will be to lead the technical evolution of our core banking systems, modernising legacy applications, driving engineering excellence, and shaping the future of our platform.

You’ll bring deep technical and domain expertise to design solutions for complex challenges. A key part of your role will be driving DevSecOps adoption and streamlining delivery by building efficient pipelines. With a strong security-first mindset, you’ll champion best practices from the first line of code and inspire others to invest in their craft, delivering world-class applications.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

  • Provides overall engineering leadership for Bankwest Technology – Core Product Platform, including software, systems, quality and site reliability.

  • Possesses full-cycle engineering experience: ideation, technical design, build, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance.

  • Designs and implements innovative technical solutions to complex problems, including onboarding and migrating to new tooling as well as removing obsolete systems and code.

  • Drives automation practices and DevSecOps journey for the platform.

  • Are well versed with solution architecture, technology blueprints, engineering roadmaps, and translating the project vision into actionable plans.

  • Actively embraces and integrates AI-driven solutions (including LLMs and agentic AI approaches) to enhance our engineering workflows and product capabilities.

  • Exceptional strategic thinking and ability to define long-term technical direction for teams and organisations.

  • Strong mentoring and leadership skills, with a passion for upskilling engineers and fostering a culture of innovation.

  • Encourages risk-taking and constructively challenges the status quo while influencing stakeholders at various levels and building diverse and inclusive teams.

Tech Skills:

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these will set you up for success in this team:

  • A proven track record of leading and delivering large-scale, complex engineering initiatives using Java, .NET, JavaScript frameworks.

  • Proven experience in modernising monolithic applications, including decomposition strategies and migration to microservices.

  • Hands-on experience with cloud technologies (AWS preferred), including infrastructure-as-code (IaC), CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native architectures.

  • Knowledge of mainframe environments and their integration with modern platforms.

  • Good understanding of core banking systems.

  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices, automation tooling, and site reliability engineering (SRE) principles.

  • Exposure to AI/ML technologies, including Generative AI (e.g., GPT), and agentic AI approaches.

  • Proficient in agile development methodologies and iterative experimentation from idea to prototype to pilot to product.
