As we welcome our new Reserve Bank Governor, we are also looking to welcome a new Principal Legal Counsel to support our nationally significant mahi.

Te tūranga – The role

In this role you will provide strategic, technical and expert guidance in the implementation of the Deposit Takers Act (DTA) 2023, working in close collaboration with programme and policy teams. You will coordinate, manage, and directly contribute to the legislative drafting process across 15 prudential standards and other activities of a legal dimension falling under the DTA Programme.

Through these efforts, you will contribute to the development of robust and high-quality legislation to support the Reserve Bank’s regulatory objectives and ensure decisions are made based on high quality legal advice.

We’re looking for a collaborative worker, who can work to deadlines effectively and is confident providing strategic advice to senior leaders. To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Thought leadership skills and ability to operate independently with a high level of initiative and judgement

  • Significant legal experience handling challenging legal problems.

  • Analytical and critical thinking skills including sound judgement and decision-making in areas of complexity, ambiguity, urgency and high risk

  • Sound knowledge of financial services, corporate law, the theory and practice of legislation and regulation.

  • Ability to handle pressure, manage demands and maintain confidence of multiple stakeholders

  • Influencing skills, with the ability to identify key audiences and implement strategies to achieve required outcomes

  • A relevant legal qualification and be eligible to hold a NZ practicing certificate
