Come Dream with Us at Hatch

There’s nothing like a great night’s sleep—the cozy, wrapped-up-in-a-heavy-blanket kind of sleep. The fire-crackling, curtains-drawn, DO NOT DISTURB kind of sleep. You know, the good stuff.

But here’s the thing: while 85% of people agree sleep is the key to their well-being, more than half are unsatisfied with their own. Whether it’s stress, interruptions, work, or little ones waking in the night, so many people need help getting truly restorative rest.

That’s where we come in. At Hatch, we’re on a mission to help people build better sleep habits—so they can feel more focused, energized, and present in their lives. We’ve designed best-in-class smart sleep devices, paired with science-backed sleep content, to help people unwind nightly, sleep deeply, and wake gently. More than 5 million sleepers of all ages have made space for rest with Hatch, with our baby products in 1 in 3 nurseries and our adult product, Restore, taking over nightstands (and TikTok) worldwide.

The Opportunity

We’re seeking a Staff or Principal Firmware Engineer to serve as a technical lead and architect for Hatch’s embedded systems. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who thrives at the intersection of hands-on problem solving and strategic technical leadership.

You’ll own the architecture and technical direction of Hatch’s connected device platform—designing scalable, reliable, and maintainable systems that power our family of sleep products. This is a hands-on technical leadership role — part systems thinker, part expert debugger, and part mentor — shaping how Hatch helps build healthy sleep habits.  You’ll help define the technical architecture across low-level firmware, connectivity (BLE, Wi-Fi), OTA, and real-time system design, ensuring reliability at scale across millions of devices in the field.

This role reports to the VP of Embedded Engineering and collaborates closely with leaders across Hardware, Mobile, Backend, and Product to deliver seamless, delightful user experiences.

What You’ll Do

Within 3 Months

  • Learn our firmware architecture, development process, and hardware ecosystem.
  • Contribute to and build context within the firmware codebase to understand key design patterns and dependencies.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the product roadmap to start envisioning the future architecture of Hatch’s connected devices.

Within 6 Months

  • Participate in incident triage (disconnects, crashes, regressions) and guide structured root-cause analysis and long-term remediation.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of our current embedded architecture and clearly articulate its strengths and limitations.
  • Champion engineering best practices—mentoring engineers, raising the technical bar, and fostering a culture of craftsmanship, accountability, and innovation.

After 1 Year

  • Debug and resolve the most challenging issues in the system, setting the standard for technical excellence.
  • Architect and lead refactors of large, complex areas of the system to improve reliability, performance, and scalability.
  • Define and drive the team’s technical direction, from coding standards to architectural evolution and next-generation system design.
  • Lead the design and implementation of firmware for Hatch’s next generation of products, ensuring alignment with company goals and product strategy.

What You’ll Bring

  • 10+ years of firmware or embedded systems engineering experience, including proven technical leadership.
  • Hands-on technical leadership style. Comfortable writing production code, unblocking engineers, and making pragmatic architectural decisions alongside setting technical direction.
  • Deep knowledge of firmware development for connected or IoT devices; experience with ESP32/FreeRTOS  in low-latency, resource-constrained environments is a strong plus.
  • Expertise with wireless communication protocols (BLE, Wi-Fi), over-the-air (OTA) update systems, and low-power system design.
  • Strong understanding of embedded observability and testability, including structured logging, diagnostics, and automated integration testing.
  • A track record of mentoring engineers and fostering a high-performance, growth-oriented environment.
  • Active interest in leveraging AI tools to improve development velocity and open new ways to deliver value to our customers.
  • Experience with hardware design or close collaboration with electrical engineering teams is a plus.
