As a Principal Data Scientist, you will be a key partner for Devoted Medical, Devoted’s clinical care function, using data to identify members suitable for specific clinical interventions; enable outreach to those members; and evaluate the effectiveness of that care. You will build robust data pipelines that underpin our products and operations, and build and maintain machine learning models related to clinical risk and appropriateness. Your technical expertise and collaborative approach will foster a data-driven culture, driving key outcomes and operational efficiency.

This high-impact role is essential for Devoted’s success, reporting into our Data Science team and working alongside Product Managers, Software Engineers, Business Intelligence Analysts, and Clinical and Business Leads to solve key challenges for the company. You’ll shape the technical and strategic direction for how Devoted identifies and engages members for clinical care, ensuring that our members get the right care, at the right place, at the right time.

In this role, you will:

  • Specialize in clinical operations and outcomes data, developing pipelines that enhance the accuracy of metrics that drive our business.

  • Build and maintain machine learning models that provide insights for effective targeting of clinical interventions.

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to measure the effectiveness of clinical programs and scale significant workflows during a period of rapid organizational growth.

  • Scope, communicate, and implement technical solutions collaboratively, delivering value iteratively while independently executing on agreed-upon plans.

  • Develop in a modern stack using agents and stored prompts to enhance coding efficiency.

  • Advise stakeholders on evaluating internally developed LLM based agents to improve workflows, and perform data extraction to leverage output of those agents in feature stores and analysis.

Required skills and experience:

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment

  • 7+ years of individual technical contributor experience

  • Interest and skill in collaborative problem-solving and effective communication

  • Advanced SQL skills

  • Experience with Python or R

  • Background in scoping, building, and maintaining machine learning models

  • Comfort with both building scalable, maintainable data pipelines, and doing deep-dive statistical analysis, predictive modeling and/or experimental design to drive business strategies

It would be great if you had background in:

  • Healthcare data and related stakeholders

  • dbt and/or Looker

  • Medicare Advantage

Your responsibilities and impact will include:

  • Defining high-impact problems in clinical operations, collaborating with business leads, product managers, engineers, and technical teammates. You’ll identify where data can best drive outcomes and use technology to solve problems and scale Devoted Medical’s operations.

  • Leveraging knowledge of clinical and operational data to drive informed business decisions.

  • Effectively communicating analysis results and technical concepts, their impact, and their limitations to leaders and teams with varying technical backgrounds.

  • Working with the Devoted Medical team to build out data warehousing infrastructure in Snowflake, enabling our BI partners to create a robust Looker reporting layer and improving Devoted’s internal operating platform.

  • Applying analytics techniques (eg. statistics, machine learning, language-based techniques) to improve the speed and accuracy of our processes

  • Leading contributions to a proactive, engaged team with a positive work ethic and a culture of inclusion and collaboration.
