Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Research Officer - Prediction of the mobility of coral rubble across the Great Barrier Reef

About This Opportunity 

This is an exciting opportunity for an early career Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Research Officer to contribute to research in the prediction of the mobility of coral rubble across the Great Barrier Reef.

The primary purpose of the position is a program of work that expands the scope and range of an experimental database to determine the physical drivers of coral rubble motion on the Great Barrier Reef and to expand the capability of tools for communicating findings to users and stakeholders.

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Research: Conduct experiments, develop new methods as needed, publish research, and collaborate with colleagues to create tools for communicating data digitally and graphically.

  • Teaching/Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise Undergraduate students and Visiting Research students conducting work on the project or related projects.

  • Citizenship and Service: Demonstrate citizenship aligned with UQ values, foster relationships with industry, government, professional bodies, and the community, and perform other duties as directed by your supervisor.

About You

  • Completion or near completion of a PhD in the hydrodynamics forces on coral and coral rubble that lead to mobility.

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in experimental measurements of such forces, appropriate instrumentation and expert knowledge in the graphical information system Reef-Risk.

  • Demonstrated teaching and supervision skills at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

  • Demonstrated ability to publish experimental research in the topic in Q1 journals.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with Undergraduate and Post-graduate students in conducting a comprehensive experimental program.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with other research staff across the University.

  • Divers Licence to conduct fieldwork on the GBR – at least to Rescue Diver level, to enable supervised research diving work.

  • Knowledge and experience in permit systems to conduct work on the GBR with consent from First Nations communities.

  • An ability to establish effect relationships and to represent and promote academic discipline at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, mandatory immunisations, etc.
