Organization Overview
The mission of the Instrumentation Department is to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation required for experimental research programs at Brookhaven Lab and to maintain the expertise and facilities in specialized high technology areas essential for this work. Development of facilities is motivated by present Brookhaven research programs and anticipated future directions of research. Our work has a significant impact on programs throughout the world that rely on state-of-the-art radiation detectors and readout electronics.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Conduct research on radio-frequency (RF) hardware for controlling superconducting qubits.
· Participate in the deployment and testing of qubit control algorithms to FPGAs.
· Participate in the development of test setups for superconducting qubits.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or closely related field of study with a focus on RF circuits and systems, ASIC design, or FPGA-based digital signal processing.
· Experience of developing test platforms that combine analog/RF circuits with FPGA-based digital control and signal processing.
· Experience with using electromagnetic simulation software and common RF and microwave test equipment (network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, etc.)
· Knowledge of printed circuit board (PCB) design, including schematic entry and layout.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Knowledge of both the theoretical fundamentals and applications of quantum computing.
· Experience working with cryogenic test setups.
· Ability to program and use modern field-programmable gate array (FPGA) development boards, such as the Xilinx RFSoC series.
· Experience working in multidisciplinary collaborations.
· Strong research experience (e.g. as evidenced by publication record).
· Excellent programming skills.
· Ability to perform experiments using low voltage (<50 V) electrical equipment.
Other Information:
· This position is on-site in Upton, NY.
· BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events
· Candidates must have received a Ph.D. by the commencement of employment.
· This position is for a term of 2 years.
· Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $71900 - $80000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
