Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Associate Director (Black Inclusion, Success, and Strategic Initiatives) the Outreach Advisor for Black Community, works closely with Enrolment Services to build relationships in communities, and develop and deliver engagement and mentorship programming for primary and secondary school students, CEGEP students, and young adults, with a goal of increasing access to higher education for Black youth.
Establishes contacts and regularly visits schools and organizations that serve Black youth to identify and inspire pathways to higher education. Contributes to the planning, execution, and continuous improvement of McGill’s outreach and recruitment endeavors to Black youth and communities, including front-line outreach and recruitment activities (both on- and off-campus), virtual outreach and recruitment (webinars, websites and social media), marketing and communication initiatives, and relationship building with internal and external partners.
Primary Responsibilities:
Builds relationships with communities, schools, and organizations serving Black youth by promoting outreach, admissions, and recruitment efforts in connection with McGill’s Action Plan to address Anti-Black racism.
Contributes to recruitment and admissions of Black students, in collaboration with the recruitment and admissions teams and the Enrolment Services, the Equity Team in the Provost’s Office, as well as Black community leaders and organizations of impact within the Black community.
Engages with participants, future students, families, alumni, counsellors and government/industry professionals. Keeps abreast of McGill’s undergraduate admissions policies, application procedures, program requirements, and student services. Develops mentorship programming in consultation with communities, schools, and organizations that appeal to interests of, meet the needs of, and build engagement with Black youth.
Oversees logistics of outreach programming delivery, including supervision of student coordinators and the development and implementation of the Student Leadership Plan supervising student mentors to increase interest in McGill University, directly and positively impacting admissions and recruitment of Black students.
Participates in efforts to build collaboration within Enrolment Services, and across faculties and units at McGill to streamline engagement with communities, share best practices, and increase efficiency.
Develops opportunities for Black youth and current Black students to participate in research and mentorship projects on campus.
Develops content, design, development and proofing of digital media and print advertising materials to effectively communicate with target audiences.
Contributes to the improvement of current initiatives and the development of new ones by evaluating and reporting on current activities, keeping abreast of best practices, and emerging tools in the rapidly changing fields of outreach, recruitment, marketing, social media, and web design.
Ensures appropriate inclusion of and sensitivity to Black culture in all outreach activities.
Administrative tasks: budget management, program-related transactions, collaboration with HR.
Responsible for travel schedules, arrangements; coordination, and events management, including in-person and virtual events, as well as all related expenses and reporting. Ensure follow-up on issues raised during and after visits/events.
