JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Penn State is searching for a full time Model Shop Technician - Grade 3 to join the team. Duties include:

 

  • Act in relief of the supervisor of the model shop during the hours that the shop supervisor is not scheduled to work and during times that the supervisor is not present in the shop
  • Assist students and faculty by demonstrating the use of and instructing in the operation of wood and metal working equipment in the model shop
  • Set up and operate shop tools such as cnc machinery(i.E. Router and plasma cutter), 3d printers, laser cutters, welders, woodworking table saws, planers, sanders, sheet metal rollers, shears, brake, drill press, shaper, table saw, grinder, metal lathe, milling machine, hand tools, etc.To work with metal, plastic and wood
  • Set up, program in g codes and operate computer numerical control(cnc) equipment
  • Create, verify, and modify cnc g codes and cad/cam files
  • Perform system maintenance
  • Assist school faculty in various areas of instructional and research programs as assigned, e.G. Confer with faculty and students on the feasibility, design, material selection, and construction of experimental, instructional and research fixtures, equipment and product prototypes
  • Perform machinery repairs including bearing, motor and gear changes
  • Perform installation, modification and preventive maintenance on a variety of wood and metal working equipment in the architecture model shop
  • Promote and maintain safe shop practices
  • Monitor students to ensure that they are working safely
  • Maintain safe working conditions in the model shop; correct unsafe conditions and report violations, suggestions, etc. , to shop supervisor
  • Design and construct jigs and fixtures to be used by students or faculty for specialized cuts or operations
  • Perform operations for students that are too advanced for them or which they are unable to do themselves
  • Perform all jointing operations for students on the jointer
  • Set up machinery to perform specialized tasks to include; dado blades on tables saw, hollow chisel mortiser, etc.
  • Perform a variety of temporary modifications for facilities including construction of pin-up walls, partitions, and installation of wiring
  • Design, build, and install new equipment and furniture such as drafting tables, light tables, lockers, bookcases, tables, cabinets etc. , and make repairs to existing furniture and equipment
  • Perform work requiring close fitting, joining and fine finishing
  • Maintain in good working order a variety of hand and power tools; sharpen blades; make adjustments as needed; replace worn or defective parts
  • Monitor the inventory of shop supplies and report shortages to supervisor
  • Order supplies and materials as directed
  • Monitor the inventory of shop hand tools and hand-held power tools and control a lending service
  • Direct the work of student help and wage payroll employees working in the shop
  • Assist with the training and orienting of these employees
  • Identify problems or shortcomings with equipment facilities, or shop practices and take corrective measures as directed by the supervisor; maintain training materials and other documentation as required

Job Requirements: Requires the use of advanced shop mathematics, together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, handbook formulas, all varieties of adjustable measuring instruments and the use of broad training in a recognized trade or craft. Equivalent to a complete accredited, indentured apprenticeship or equivalent to high school plus a 2-year technical college education. Over 3 years up to and including 5 years of effective experience.

Work Schedule: 1:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Days Off:     Friday, Saturday

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
