JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
At the direction and supervision of R&D engineers, carry out product and process failure investigations, as well as support long-term R&D research by using analytical equipment and performing testing. This is carried out through the set up and performance of tests for assigned rapid response tasks and research projects as well as preparation of preliminary reports under the supervision of Research and Development Engineers and Managers. This position is also expected to assist and support R&D’s continuous improvement initiatives.

Perform DIC imaging and residual stress measurement
Set-up and perform heat treatments such as air and inert gas heating/tempering, air/water/oil quench, and salt bath aging/tempering
Set-up and perform moisture analysis, sieve analysis, hydrogen testing, collect data and prepare preliminary report to be reviewed by Senior Met-Tech, Engineers or Managers
Basic Gleeble thermal simulation testing such as, but not limited to collecting data used to construct CCT and WCCT diagrams
Perform basic mechanical testing, commonly used for the qualification and release of steel products, such as, but not limited to: tensile testing, micro/macro hardness testing, Charpy impact testing, and bend testing
Basic NDT (Dye Penetrant, Magnetic Particle) for identification of surface defects in the course of internal investigations (not for release of product)
Basic corrosion testing with low safety risk (ie, no H2S gas present)
Investigate failures using optical microscopy and/or using technical methods, such as, qualitative/quantitative metallographic tests, micro examinations, micrographs, and SEM/EDS
Prepare samples for mechanical testing and chemical and metallographic analyses, e.g., cutting, mounting, polishing, Nital and common etching
Perform calibration of measuring devices used in their work
Prepare test results in a reporting format for review and analysis by Engineers/Managers
Participate in 6S and Housekeeping, safety and quality and internal audit programs, and assist with developing/updating relevant documents such as safety, training, and work procedures under the supervision of an engineer/manager
Performs other duties as they might be assigned
Requirements
Diploma in Metallurgical Technology or equivalent
One-year related experience
Typical administrative / office environment: no exposure to adverse environmental conditions
Outside environmental conditions: no effective protection from the weather
Exerting up to 50 lb of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 lb frequently
