This is a full-time Medical Laboratory Technologist in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. The incumbent of this position will perform tests on multiple species of animals. This position operates Monday through Friday 8:00A-5:00P with the exception of emergencies.
Job Responsibilities:
92% Receive and process specimens into the laboratory from the hospital, outside clinicians and research. Specimens include blood, urine and body fluids from multiple species (canine, feline, equine, avian, etc.) Perform data entry into the laboratory computer system followed by analysis of the samples. Operate analyzers in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and coagulation. Manually perform crossmatches and microscopic urine sediment evaluations. Leukocyte differentials and cellular morphology performed on blood smears with a microscope. Incumbent must have special instruction from a college or university to perform all these tasks, in addition to on-site training for application to veterinary medicine. Perform quality control checks on all procedures and equipment.
5% Other duties as assigned.
3% Learn to maintain and troubleshoot analyzers and assays to include troubleshooting on the telephone with technical service. Inventory stock and assist in ordering supplies for the laboratory. Answer calls from outside clinicians and hospitals.
Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a current Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Generalist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Specialist license plus one of the following:
-A bachelor's degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science plus one year of experience as a medical technologist; OR
-A bachelor's degree in a biological, physical, or chemical science plus two years of experience as a medical technologist.

Physical Demands & Additional Information:
Must be able to accurately distinguish between different colors. Must be comfortable and knowledgeable with the handling of hazardous materials (e.g. blood and bodily fluids as potential sources of bacterial and viral pathogens including zoonotic agents such as; Leptospirosis, Rabies, Salmonellosis, and Western Nile virus). Must be able to remain seated for extended periods of time while looking under a microscope. Must be able to accurately distinguish between different colors and have near-vision acuity at 20 inches or less.
Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.
Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, climbing, crawling bending, squatting, and/or twisting.
