Mechanical Technician - Beamlines

TRIUMF’s Accelerator Division operates and develops the accelerator infrastructure and drives science and technology at TRIUMF and in Canada and ensures the highest availability of the TRIUMF accelerator complex for maximum research productivity.

Our Beamlines Group is looking to hire a Mechanical Technician to join their team and support technical activities.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

General

  • Provides moderately complex technical support to activities supported by the group or department including maintenance, break fix, upgrades or projects under the general guidance of a senior mentor or mentors
  • Responsible for short term (<1 year) objectives with impact on own work and full team
  • Work can include
    • Completion of hardware assemblies under the guidance of a senior mentor.
    • Completion of magnetic field measurements using our magnet measurement equipment and hall probes including documentation of field mapping tests..
    • Completion of alignment of equipment using laser tracker, laser scanner and coordinate measuring machine (CMM) arm.
    • Documentation of tasks to support group alignment records including installation drawings and as built records.

Specific 

  • Provides moderately complex technical support for the primary and secondary magnetic beamlines
  • Provides moderately complex technical support for the Ariel beamlines and driver systems (BL4N and Target hall installations)
  • Provides moderately complex technical support in the assembly of UHV systems

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: 

  • No supervisory or leadership responsibilities.
  • May provide guidance and assistance to entry level technicians

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • broad knowledge in technical area of expertise including practises and approaches relevant to providing technical support to the Beamlines group
  • demonstration of a technical aptitude
  • the ability to follow standard procedures while working on problems of moderate scope
  • the ability to apply defined practices and procedures in analysis of situation or data
  • ability to exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate actions and obtain solutions
  • ability to build productive internal/external working relationships
  • probe and listen carefully; present information clearly and in an appropriate style’ make technical information clear; persuades others in straightforward situations
  • experience with CNC machining would be considered an asset

NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER (NEW):

Some work will require access to exclusion areas where there are activated components. The position requires the incumbent to be trained as a NEW. This is required to access and work in areas that are limited to NEWs, as well as for planning and conducting work in radiation environments. TRIUMF will provide training to the successful candidate.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
