Mechanical Engineer

KBR is providing Project Management Services encompassing Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning phase execution supporting KBR’s client Sonangol’s multi-billion-dollar grass roots Lobito Refinery Project in Angola, Africa. 

This position will mobilize to Tianjin, China to facilitate project engineering management in accordance with industry and project standards to ensure corporate requirements are followed.  The candidate will assist in the review of construction activity work schedules to assure efficiency in the execution of tasks & in coordinating the distribution of construction work packages as necessary.

Job Description

  • Responsible for design, specification, selection and services relating to mechanical equipment such as rotating machinery, pressure vessels, atmospheric storage tanks, fired and unfired heat transfer equipment, utility equipment, packaged units, material handling and solids processing systems.
  • May also include design, specification, selection and services of mechanical systems for buildings such as gases, fluids, and heating, ventilating, air conditioning and vertical transportation.
  • Under general supervision, performs all conventional aspects of the functional area subject matter.
  • Devises new approaches to problems encountered.
  • Plans, schedules, and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Performs work which involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements.
  • Provides technical guidance to designers and less experienced engineers. Job tasks, correctly performed, impact indirectly on cost containment, efficiency, profitability or operations.
  • Certification as a Licensed/Chartered Professional Engineer is preferred.

Exchangers Analytical

  • Experience  activities
    • Has a basic knowledge of TEMA .
    • Understanding ASME a plus
    • Has used an exchanger rating program such as HTRI or HTFS
    • Mechanical detailing of heat exchangers/pressure vessels a plus.
    • Has worked with exchangers/pressure vessels in the shop or field plus
    • Has requisitioned equipment
    • Has reviewed supplier drawings

Exchanger Mechanical

  • Experience  activities
    • Has a basic knowledge of TEMA .
    • Understanding and use of ASME code.
    • Use of exchanger rating program such as HTRI or HTFS a plus.
    • Mechanical detailing of heat exchangers/pressure vessels
    • Has worked with exchangers/pressure vessels in the shop or field a plus.
    • Has requisitioned equipment
    • Has reviewed supplier drawings

Machinery

Incumbent will be responsible for the specification and application of rotating machinery including compressors, turbines, pumps.  Additional duties will include specification, selection and services relating to mechanical equipment such utility equipment, packaged units, material handling and bulk solids processing systems.  

  • Knowledgeable with analysis of fluid/thermal systems
  • Basic understanding of machine design
  • Familiarity with rotodynamic principals and analysis desirable. 
  • Perform technical bid evaluations.
  • Vendor drawing review and engineering coordination of technical information with vendors and company engineering specialists.
  • Witnessing of acceptance tests at vendor shops.
  • Field commissioning and startup support when required.

  • Technical Skills acquired with experience includes some of the following

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering field
  • 6-10 years of progressive experience, specifically in rotating machinery specification and selection.
  • Working knowledge of current API standards for rotating equipment, particularly centrifugal pumps, centrifugal compressors, and auxiliary systems.
  • Experience with chemical, petrochemical, refining, and oil and gas projects is preferred, especially LNG liquefaction, ammonia, ethylene, refining and offshore facilities.
  • Engineering contractor experience preferred
  • Computer proficiency in MS Windows and related MS Office productivity software
  • Additional experience with installation and commissioning is a plus
  • Working knowledge of API standards for steam and gas turbines is a plus

Vessels

  • Experience has included
    • Has worked at least 6-10 years with pressure vessels for engineering company or pressure vessel shop.
    • Has worked with exchangers/ pressure vessels in the shop or field (a plus)
    • Has visited shop to inspect equipment (a plus)
    • Has requisitioned pressure vessels
    • Has performed bid reviews for pressure vessels
    • Has reviewed supplier drawings
  • Technical Skills acquired with experience includes some of the following:
    • Has a working knowledge of ASME pressure vessel code.
    • Has worked with the API storage tank code.
    • Has used software to design pressure vessels such as PVElite or Compress
    • Mechanical detailing of pressure vessels
