Purpose

The Drag is the professionally-led, student-powered audio production house of Texas Student Media (TSM) at the University of Texas at Austin. The managing director will be responsible for spearheading the short and long-term strategic direction of The Drag. The person in this role will, among other things, direct The Drag’s marketing, fundraising and revenue generation, audio content strategy, event planning, manage client partnerships and supervise students. This position also includes an advisory support role for 91.7 KVRX Radio, TSM’s FCC-licensed, student-run radio station.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations for The Drag, working with student staff and the executive producer to manage audio projects that are in progress, approve new projects, own all client relationships and ensure operations are running smoothly.

  • Creative input and advisory role for various podcasts already in production; guide formation of podcasts and work with student groups on journalistic reporting, editing, producing and sound design to create, publish and promote longform, nonfiction, journalistic podcasts.

  • Direct fundraising and revenue strategy for The Drag. This includes selling and managing podcast advertising, working with and finding new donors and running fundraising campaigns. Create strategy for events as fundraising opportunities.

  • Oversee marketing efforts for The Drag and individual podcasts, working closely with student marketing team to form strategies for PR campaigns, social media accounts, website content, the newsletter and other external and internal outreach channels.

  • Reach out to news organizations, podcasters and other like-minded individuals and organizations to form collaborative partnerships with The Drag.

  • Support the TSM Broadcast Adviser and KVRX Radio students as required, including technical support, production assistance, meeting oversight and other items as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years of experience in audio production. Must have a proven track record managing content teams in a journalistic setting, know how to usher journalistic content from the idea stage to completion, and have expertise in marketing, especially related to social media content and strategy. Experience creating and managing events, experience in fundraising and revenue generation, and a demonstrated ability to teach practical journalistic skills to others. Have a passion for podcasting and a well-defined understanding of the industry.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's or advanced degree in Communications or a Communications related field and a minimum of 5 years of experience in the media industry. Previous experience with contracts and creative project bidding, budget management, and a quick learner who is willing to gain expertise in audio editing and production skills. Proven background working with college students of various educational backgrounds, or commensurate experience. 

Salary Range

$60,000
