The Washington Post is looking for a transformative technical accounting manager to join the leadership team of our Financial Accounting department.

- You are a subject matter expert on technical accounting issues, preparation and analysis of financial statements and disclosures and accounting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and you are adept at using your knowledge combined with comprehensive judgment to advise on the appropriate treatment for business operations.

- You are skilled at organizing competing priorities for yourself and your team, including balancing core responsibilities such as month-end close, year-end close, annual internal and external audit process and overall responsibility for managing the operations of the financial accounting team with collaboration with stakeholders throughout the Company.
- You are comfortable with providing assistance and oversight where applicable to our risk management, tax, treasury, and international compliance functions.
- You are intellectually curious, innovative when it comes to processes and utilizing automation tools, and you possess an attention to detail and dedication to quality.

- You are skilled at proposing and implementing process improvements to gain efficiency and to streamline processes. We are re-imagining how the accounting team works – away from manual work to RPA and AI-enabled workflows, and this role will be pivotal in leading the team through this transition.

How You'll Support the Mission
- Ensuring that the department operates efficiently without sacrificing accuracy, and meets monthly and annual reporting deadlines, both internal and external.
- Coaching and mentoring a team of senior accounting staff members, enabling them to achieve timely and accurate results, and facilitate their professional growth.
- The review and approval of period close work product prepared by the accounting team, including journal entries for revenue and expense accruals, variance to budget analyses and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Recommending and implementing improvements to the company's policy documentation and procedures to enhance the overall quality of financial reporting efforts.
- Supervising the preparation and delivery of timely and accurate financial reports or statements for management, stakeholders, and external parties, such as auditors, vendors, or regulatory agencies.
- Providing input in conjunction with the preparation of the annual budget and interim forecasts, including supporting schedules.
- Collaborating with the entire finance team, including tax, payroll and financial operations and planning departments on monthly and annual reporting
- Preparation of technical accounting papers supporting our positions and accounting policies for review by the Controller and assisting with interpreting and implementing authoritative accounting guidance and standards .
- Providing support to other departments across the company to ensure that the financial impact of strategic decisions are considered, leading to proper accounting and reporting of resulting activity.
- Preparation of ad hoc financial analyses and other duties as assigned.
Skills and Experience you Bring
- Degree in Accounting (CPA required)
- 10+ years of general ledger accounting, account reconciliation preparation and review experience, including 2 or more years of supervisory experience
- A demonstrated understanding of accounting and financial concepts
- Clear and concise communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written
- Experience with automation and project management tools, including Alteryx and Asana
- Knowledge of Oracle, Workday, BNA Bloomberg and Blackline
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Detail-oriented with demonstrated initiative in research and follow-through.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to read and analyze financial reports.

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.
The salary range for this position is:
$105,600 - $176,000 Annual
The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
