Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Maintenance Manager is responsible for achieving the highest level of plant equipment reliability through committed support of the Sonoco Performance System (SPS), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), and strong ownership of the Maintenance Excellence process, while leading, coaching, and developing team members to build a skilled, high-performing maintenance organization.
What you'll be doing:
- Champion the Maintenance Excellence (ME) process. Serve as the Maintenance Excellence Leader for the Plant SPS (TPM) Steering Team.
- Provide leadership to develop a highly skilled and effective team, identifying and closing skill gaps, establishing advancement pathways, and building a pipeline for future talent.
- Oversee performance management, including hiring, evaluations, coaching, and corrective actions, while ensuring the team has the tools, training, and environment needed to achieve and sustain the highest standards of equipment performance.
- Foster an engaged, collaborative work environment where maintenance personnel uphold high standards of housekeeping, craftsmanship, and equipment reliability.
- Hold team members accountable to established standards and expectations, reinforcing positive behaviors and addressing performance issues promptly and professionally.
- Lead troubleshooting, RCA, and implementation of countermeasures for complex mechanical, electrical, and conveyance issues, ensuring all repairs meet applicable codes and standards.
- Develop a collaborative culture where production and maintenance work together to identify and resolve abnormal or degraded equipment conditions that could impact safety, quality, or productivity.
- Support the “Zero-Loss” initiative; improve overall equipment effectiveness by targeting the major losses, involve operators in the maintenance of their equipment, improve maintenance efficiency and effectiveness, training to improve skills and knowledge and participating in early equipment management and maintenance prevention design.
- Implement a maintenance strategy for equipment important to safety, quality and productivity that effectively utilizes proactive (preventive and predictive) maintenance and performance monitoring to detect equipment degradation and employ appropriate maintenance to prevent failure.
- Oversee the operation and maintenance of all facility infrastructure and systems—including HVAC, compressed air, and utilities—as well as overall building and grounds upkeep across the campus.
- Lead and coordinate maintenance operations with internal teams and contractors, ensuring equipment reliability and operational efficiency while developing and maintaining spare parts inventory with appropriate min/max levels and managing procurement and service contracts effectively.
- Actively collaborates with division engineering team and technical resources across the division to leverage best practices and execute capital projects.
- Personally involved with the technical details of the action plans to correct important equipment problems. Frequently attend critical meetings on equipment performance to establish teamwork and accountability. Verify that corrective actions are timely and effective.
- Establish and oversee a structured work management process, including identifying, documenting, planning, scheduling, executing, and closing maintenance activities.
- Develop and implement a clear work order (WO) generation system to ensure equipment issues are properly logged, prioritized, and resolved with detailed work packages and effective permanent countermeasures.
- Apply reliability tools (RCA and FMEA) to determine the root cause of critical equipment failures and downtime. Identify the appropriate countermeasures and solutions to improve equipment reliability and prevent recurrence.

- (Preferred) knowledge in extruder, tool and die, and reclamation material conveyance.
- Relationship Management – build and maintain strong professional relationships, providing high-level service and proactively addressing needs.
- Demonstrated financial acumen with experience creating, managing, and adhering to budgets, optimizing plant operating costs, and overseeing capital projects to ensure cost-effective operations.
- Strong understanding of OSHA requirements related to equipment in-house. Ability to identify gaps and assist in developing/implementing countermeasures to achieve Zero Safety Incidents.
- Proficient in Root Cause Analysis techniques (FMEA’s, 5Why’s, ATS, etc) and developing/implementing Countermeasures to drive Zero Breakdown culture.
- Process-oriented. Can identify gaps in any process and develop/implement countermeasure to eliminate.
- Basic mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, instrumentation, lubrication and predictive maintenance understanding. Ability to interpret schematics and technical drawings (or ability to learn quickly)
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and CMMS
- Minimum education required (If 4 year): Bachelor’s degree in management, engineering, or a technical field preferred
- Minimum education requirement (if 2 year) : associate degree in industrial maintenance, engineering, or equivalent.
- Minimum Experience (Preferred): 3-5 years of experience in a technical manufacturing role with leadership responsibilities, including 1–2+ years in manufacturing maintenance or supervisory experience. Experience with TPM, reliability programs, and CMMS is also preferred.
Compensation:
The annual base salary range for this role is from $102,080 to $114,840, plus a quarterly target bonus of 12.5% of base salary.
