About the team:

Our central localization technology and expertise service delivers core localization infrastructure, linguistic assets, and expert guidance to teams across Elsevier. Since launching in 2021, we have rapidly expanded our support to a wide range of stakeholders, products, and use cases.

Our growing team is part of Operations and sits in the AI Evaluation, DDE and Process Innovation department.  This diverse and globally distributed group works in a matrixed environment to deliver scalable data science and localization solutions for clinicians, researchers, and students. The Localization Solutions & AI Specialist will report to the Localization Solutions Manager (based in Amsterdam).

 

About the role

As the Localization Solutions & AI Specialist, you will drive the implementation of AI-powered localization technologies, process automation, and API integrations to optimize and scale our global content delivery infrastructure. You will collaborate closely across Technology, Data Science and other diverse stakeholder groups to manage and improve our translation management system, language data assets and AI translation solutions, ensuring scalable, automated, integrated and quality-driven localization processes.

You will coordinate infrastructure projects, interface with technical teams and vendors, and lead the implementation and evaluation of AI-driven translation workflows. Your work will play a key role in establishing our department as the center of excellence for localization technology and AI translation quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation, evaluation and ongoing optimization of AI-powered localization solutions, partnering with Technology, Data Science, Responsible AI, Procurement, external vendors and other stakeholders.

  • Oversee the organization, optimization, and scalability of language data assets (translation memories, term bases, glossaries) to maximize quality and efficiency

  • Manage and support API and connector integrations between our TMS, CMS and other enterprise platforms to ensure seamless, efficient localization workflows. Work closely with Technology teams and solutions vendors to understand data formats and requirements.

  • Lead the planning, coordination and optimization of automated localization workflows within our TMS and related systems.

  • Be a localization technology advocate, acting as a subject matter expert on localization technology and best practices

  • Develop and maintain tools and processes for tracking workflow, AI and translation quality. Proactively test, troubleshoot and validate system integrations to ensure smooth operation.

  • Liaise between technology groups, software vendors, and non-technical stakeholders to facilitate clear understanding of system capabilities & limitations, data formats, and integration requirements

 

Skills & Experience

  • Experience with and passion for evaluating and implementing AI solutions for localization use cases

  • Deep knowledge of Translation Management Systems including, workflow configuration, project templates/workflow automation, API/Connectors and software integrations. Experience configuring and supporting localization solutions in SAAS environments and integrating CMS platforms with localization tools.

  • Proven experience designing and coordinating technical system integrations for localization, working closely with Technology or Engineering teams. Familiarity with automation tools and workflows that drive localization efficiency, plus ability to perform basic data mapping and validation tasks

  • Strong analytical skills; able to design dashboards, quality monitoring systems, and reporting solutions.

  • Experience managing vendors and overseeing technical projects, including requirements gathering and implementation oversight.

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills for partnering with both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Proactive, self-directed approach to leading initiatives, with strong attention to detail and good problem-solving abilities.

  • Understanding of internationalization (i18n) best practices.

Technical skills/nice to haves:

  • Experience with BI tools (PowerBI, Tableau, Looker, etc.).

  • Experience with REST API

  • Experience with Python

  • Background implementing or evaluating MT quality metrics (BLEU, COMET, MQM, etc.).
