Job Summary: This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

Major Duties:

• The LMFT serves as a couple and family therapist at an advanced practice level and has mastery of theories and modalities used in the specialized treatment mental health problems and relationship problems through the modality of couple and family therapy. Duties include but are not limited to: Completes comprehensive clinical assessments with Veterans and their family members/significant others to fully understand a Veteran's needs and identify treatment goals. Reviews all data, subjective and objective, and makes a clinical assessment identifying needs and strengths. Assesses high risk factors, i.e. suicidality, acuity, and need for additional and or specialized services. Serves a variety of at risk veterans such as: combat related readjustment or injuries, military sexual trauma, serious mental illness, and substance use issues who tend to have frequent and severe crises, lack family or an adequate community support network, lack self-monitoring skills, and/or have significant deficits in coping skills and require continuing professional psychosocial support. Based on the psychosocial assessment, uses professional judgment and advanced practice skills to make a psychosocial diagnosis. Develops psychosocial treatment plans independently with appropriate levels of professional autonomy. Participates in the assignment of veterans to treatment teams and programs if possible, otherwise, provides coverage to support the veterans' needs. Direct care responsibilities are performed in person and/or via Tele-Mental Health modality. Serves as a mentor to other LMFTs and acts as a role model for entry level LMFTs and interdisciplinary team members as a senior clinician with advanced practice skills and expertise. Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the JHQVAMC's Family Therapy Clinic. Qualifications: Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency Requirement - Per VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3j: No person will be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C., chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA who is not proficient in written and spoken English. Education - Candidates must meet one of the following: Hold a master's degree or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from a program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE), OR Hold a master's degree or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from a MFT program from a regionally accredited institution, OR Hold a master's degree or doctoral degree in a comparable mental health degree (Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor, Social Work, Psychiatric Nursing, Psychology, and Psychiatry) that meets the current VA qualification standard of that profession. Licensure - Candidates must hold a full, current, and unrestricted Marriage and Family Therapy license to independently practice marriage and family therapy in a state. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Experience: In additional to meeting the basic requirements as stated above, you must have the following: GS-12 Marriage and Family Therapist (Advanced) Experience Requirements: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, to qualify for the GS-12 have you successfully completed evidence-based training in family therapy and graduated from a COAMFTE accredited program OR have passed the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Board (AMFTRB) examination and do you have at least 5 years of post-licensed clinical experience in delivery of family systems therapy (with at least 1 year equivalent to the GS-11 grade level). This experience must demonstrate the use of an evidence-based family therapy model while exhibiting progressive professional competency and expertise that demonstrates the following professional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to provide specialized consultation for complex cases involving individuals, families and/or couples utilizing evidenced-based family systems theory/therapy. Ability to provide crisis intervention which includes assessment, safety planning and complex treatment planning using independent clinical judgment utilizing family systems theory/therapy. Ability to provide family systems therapy, which seeks to address Veterans and their family members on an individual level and deals with interpersonal interactions. Ability to provide unlicensed MFT staff/trainees with systemic clinical supervision towards licensure from a family systems theory/therapy perspective.
