HL Lead & Learn provides professional development programming for the firm’s attorneys and business services personnel. Based in the Washington office, the Learning & Development Manager will be responsible for developing and delivering innovative learning programs for lawyers across the Americas region. This role will focus on creating high-impact curricula, applying adult learning principles, and ensuring programs are engaging, relevant, and aligned with firm priorities. This role will involve assessing developmental needs, designing and facilitating sessions, and evaluating the overall effectiveness of programs. This role requires a minimum of four days working in the office per week.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Design & Development
- In collaboration with other members of the Learning & Development team, lead the design and development of attorney learning programs, including core curriculum, workshops, and practice-specific initiatives.
- Apply instructional design principles and adult learning theory to create engaging, competency-based content.
- Develop blended learning solutions that integrate in-person, virtual, and e-learning components.
- Create session plans and briefing documents to support program faculty.
- Produce engaging and clear communications to effectively promote programs and initiatives.
- Research and offer suggestions for new vendors and internal subject matter experts.
Program Delivery
- Participate in delivery and facilitation of high-impact learning sessions and ensure seamless delivery across multiple formats.
- Oversee end-to-end program execution, including scheduling and logistics, technology integration, and participant engagement.
Needs Assessment & Evaluation
- Conduct lawyer learning needs analyses in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Use data and feedback to continuously improve offerings.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Partner with practice leaders, subject matter experts, senior attorneys, and attorney talent team to tailor content for different career stages.
- Build strong relationships across the Americas region to ensure alignment with firm priorities.
- Work on cross-functional initiatives, such as firmwide mentoring.
Technology & Innovation
- Leverage the firm’s learning management system and digital tools to scale learning and enhance accessibility.
- Stay informed on emerging trends in legal professional development and integrate innovative approaches.
Team Leadership
- Manage and mentor Learning and Development Coordinators, including regular one-on-one meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Seven (7)+ years of relevant professional development experience
- Five (5)+ years of experience supervising or managing others in professional development preferred
- Master’s degree in related field or JD highly desirable
- Experience with project management required, with a proven track record of delivering projects in a complex environment is essential, together with an ability to deal sensitively, proactively and effectively with a range of stakeholders
- Experience working independently, as well as within cross-functional teams, in a collaborative, professional environment
- Proven track record of increased responsibility over time for program design, development and implementation.
- Facilitating and public-speaking experience
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Enthusiasm and desire to pursue a career in learning and development
- Ability to preserve confidentiality and exercise discretion
- Ability to travel to other offices within the Americas, Europe, and Asia
Core hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with one hour for lunch. Must be flexible to work additional hours.
In Washington, D.C., the annualized salary range for this position is $141,000 to $185,000 depending on the candidate's overall experience and other job-related factors permitted by law. Full time employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus. In addition, full time employees as well as some part time employees, will be eligible for the firm’s fringe benefits as they currently exist.
