Lead Member of Technical Staff – LMTS

Responsibilities

35% [Primary Function] Technical Execution

  • Lead the design, governance, and execution of the organization’s automation program for Private Cloud/Hosted environments, including strategy, roadmaps, standards, and measurements of success.
  • Define and maintain a catalog of reusable automation assets (Ansible roles, Puppet modules, Terraform modules, scripts in Perl/Python/Bash/PowerShell) and establish governance for their creation, usage, versioning, testing, and deployment.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (SRE, Platform, Security, Development) to identify automation opportunities, prioritize the automation backlog, and translate business requirements into scalable automation solutions.
  • Establish and enforce automation development lifecycle processes (design reviews, code reviews, testing/validation, change management, release management, and documentation) to ensure quality, security, and auditable changes.
  • Define and track key metrics (automation coverage, toil reduction, deployment frequency, change failure rate, mean time to recovery) and provide regular reporting to stakeholders.
  • Drive adoption of automation practices across teams by mentoring, coaching, and enabling engineers to write maintainable, idempotent, and secure automation code.
  • Develop and maintain tooling and templates to accelerate new project onboardings and reduce manual repetitive work.
  • Ensure automation aligns with security, compliance, and audit requirements (patch management, OS hardening, access control, logging) within an on-prem context.
  • Lead knowledge sharing and enablement initiatives (workshops, internal blogs, runbooks, and onboarding materials) to propagate automation best practices.

25% Contributions to the Team

  • Act as the subject matter expert for automation within Hosted domain.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies (daily stand-ups, sprint planning, sprint reviews) and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Perform peer code reviews to ensure quality standards for automation code and infrastructure definitions.
  • Take ownership of what the team builds after a release or deployment; measure success by adoption, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
  • Volunteer for backlog work, coordinate efforts across the team to ensure timely and effective delivery.
  • Drive self-organization and influence how the team functions in collaboration with peers.
  • Participate in the team’s interview processes as needed to influence hiring decisions.

25% Cross-functional Coordination and Communication

  • Collaborate across technology and product teams to align work with business goals.
  • Establish and nurture strong relationships with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Share business and technical learnings with the broader engineering and product organization, tailoring the message to different audiences.

15% Mentorship of Others

  • Advise and share knowledge with teammates to maximize overall productivity and effectiveness; foster a culture of learning and automation.

Education, Experience, & Skills Required

  • 6-8 years of experience in technical operations or engineering, with a strong focus on DevOps/automation in an on-prem VMware environment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • Deep experience with distributed systems and on-prem virtualization (VMware vSphere/vCenter/ESXi).
  • Proficiency with configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) in an on-prem context.
  • Scripting proficiency in Bash, Python, and Perl.
  • Experience with CI/CD practices and tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI) and Git-based workflows.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and logging stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK) and incident response processes.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset; ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotations and handling production incidents.
  • Experience with Windows and Linux operating systems in an enterprise setting.

  • Remote work option with on-site collaboration at a local athenahealth office as required.
