About the Team

The Strategy, Insights & Performance department exists as a force multiplier in PXC. The department’s Insights function is made of multi-disciplinary Hubs which are aligned to specific business domains. As the centre for PXC’s data engineering, reporting and analytics, the Hubs work to make insights the engine of business success. They partner with senior leaders (up to the Executive Leadership Team), expert analysts (Analyst Community) and Data Authority (Quality, Governance, Architecture, etc.) to deliver value. The role sits within a Hub, reporting to the Insights Hub Manager.



About the Role

As a Lead Data Engineer, you will be fundamental to the success of the Insights Hub, managing pipelines that transform, collate and organise data into a data model that enables value to be derived from it. In addition, you will be responsible for the continued maintenance and updates of the data model used by your Hub, working in partnership with other Lead Engineers to avoid duplication. To be successful, you will bring curiosity, accountability and enthusiasm to your day-to-day role, with strong communication and task management. A passion for data is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Accountability, Ownership, Authority

  • Manages, coaches and develops data engineering team within the Hub

  • Works with Delivery Manager on backlog management and workload allocation

  • Engages with stakeholders to understand requirements in order to shape design and modelling

  • Carries out design and makes design proposals 

  • Supports workshops and discovery sessions where required

  • Breaks down work for more junior data engineers, so that they can work independently from backlog items, with all blockers removed

  • Provides effort estimation to Delivery Manager for own work, and for those of their team being assigned work items.

  • Manages code branching and deployment pipelines for own work and that of other data engineers 

  • Delivers code, makes deployments when required as well as design responsibilities

  • Ensures own work meets development standards (ways of working and technical standards) and supervises the quality and standards aspects of the work of data engineers 

  • Supports incident investigation and problem solving where required by Operations team

  • Consults SME whenever requirements suggest introduction of new tech or new technique

  • Contributes to knowledge base through documentation and feedback on technical standards

  • Works as a leader within the Hub by setting the example of best practice, mentor/support more junior team members and take an active role in continuous improvement. 

  • Develops and maintain working knowledge of the business’s products, systems, key processes.

Must have:

  • Work collaboratively with business and technology stakeholders to define, document and analyse reporting and analytical requirements

  • Design and document flexible and practical data warehouse models to recommended industry standards

  • Design robust, secure data pipeline architectures to populate data lake and SQL databases in the cloud

  • Experience in Agile delivery and DevOps ways of working

  • Line manage a small team of Senior Data Engineers and Data Engineers

  • Mentor and guide the wider development team to transition to cloud data architectures and design patterns

  • Act as SME for the Enterprise Data Warehouse and its underlying technologies providing support to end users and stakeholders, plus the wider development and test teams.
