Dow has an exciting opportunity available for a Lead Civil Designer located at our facility in Houston, TX.

About you and this role:

The Lead Civil Designer provides specialized technical support and solutions for project teams, operations and maintenance. Understands and implements Most Effective Technology (MET), work process, tools and industry best practices within their discipline. The Hardware Disciplines within Engineering and Maintenance are comprised of the following disciplines: Buildings, Civil, Electrical, Instrument, Materials, Mechanical, Process Containment Equipment and Piping. Hardware Disciplines support both projects and technical support teams as an inspector, designer on large projects or lead for their discipline on projects. Requires expanded conceptual and practical knowledge in own job discipline and broadens capabilities.

The Lead Civil Designer’s primary roles or functions is to coordinate the execution of the Civil project plan and the implementation of the Civil work processes and best practices among the project civil designers in the design engineering phase of the project.

Responsibilities:

  • Share Accountability with the Project Lead Engineer for compliance with the TES and project safety initiatives.

  • Responsible for providing input to the Civil Lead on designer resource requirements including appropriate quantity and skill set of designers for the project scope.

  • Share Accountability with the Project Lead Engineer for the quality of deliverables

  • Accountable for the overall allocation, maintenance, and reporting of designers thorough the project

  • Maintain awareness of schedule, milestones, and challenges of the project and communicate to the Project Lead Engineer.

  • Act as a network hub for all designers in Central Engineering (CEC and CEH)

  • Coordinate training for designers.

  • Responsible for the appropriate level of attendance at project meetings including site contractor visits.

  • Assist in project reviews and team checks as required to ensure quality

  • Act as a back up to Project Engineer Lead as required and appropriate

  • Coordinate implementation of Civil Best practices

  • Drive the implementation of Dow MET and best practices

  • Ensure compliance with Dow standards maximizing value for the business and providing the lowest long-term cost to operate and maintain.

  • Responsible for deliverable consistency across all designers in the project team

  • Mentor and Coach new designers as required

  • Represent the Civil discipline in meetings and multi discipline discussions

  • Maintain regularly recurring update meetings with all designers as needed to disseminate information from Project meetings.

  • Gather lessons learned from projects and leverage these learning’s to Project.

  • Drive the implementation of new technologies i.e.: laser scanning

  • Drive Minimum plus mentality

  • Effectively manage (along with the Civil Engineer Lead) project specific needs that deviate from normal work process.

  • Deliver Value in design.

  • Drive NO CHANGE MENTALITY

  • Responsible for managing bulks against authorization estimate quantities per progress check point agreed to with the Civil Engineer Lead and alert Civil Engineer Lead of bulk changes greater than 5%.

  • Responsible to alert Civil Engineer Lead on PDN request and identification. Civil Engineer Lead may request that Civil Designer lead share PDN responsibilities.

  • Responsible for managing design hours spend against authorization estimate hours.

  • Share responsibility and accountability with Civil Engineer Lead on meeting commitments (dates and budget)

  • Responsible for providing input to Civil Engineer Lead in AWP implementation.

  • Responsible for providing input to Civil Engineer Lead on Implementation of Integrated work strategy for designers including scope allocation per center, design hour allocation per center per scope item, alignment with Central engineering Blended rate goals, and work process (i.e. communication, trips, WebEx, phone calls).

  • Some travel is required to support projects

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree AND 5 years of relevant work experience OR 10 years of experience in civil engineering design.

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States.  No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Your Skills:

  • Engineering Drawings: An engineering drawing is a type of technical drawing that is used to convey information about an object. A common use is to specify the geometry necessary for the construction of a component and is called a detail drawing. Usually, a number of drawings are necessary to completely specify even a simple component. The drawings are linked together by a master drawing or assembly drawing which gives the drawing numbers of the subsequent detailed components, quantities required, construction materials and possibly 3D images that can be used to locate individual items.
  • 3D Modeling: In 3D computer graphics, 3D modeling is the process of developing a mathematical coordinate-based representation of any surface of an object in three dimensions via specialized software.
  • Microsoft SharePoint: SharePoint is a web-based collaborative platform that integrates with Microsoft Office.
  • Cross Functional Collaboration: Work with Peers, functional support groups (tech center, quality, maintenance, etc.) to accomplish facility goals and resolve day to day challenges associated with their processes of responsibility.
  • Project Leadership Skills: Ability to facilitate cross functionally a coordinated effort to accomplish a project.  To identify steps to milestones needed to accomplish the goals of a project.  Examples: Identifying the actions needed to meet an LPP standard in the facility, and leading a small team to implement the actions. 
  • Communication: Strategic communication management is the control of communication in and out of an organization to promote the clear exchange of information and ideas.
  • Accountability: Accountability is the acknowledgment and assumption of responsibility for actions, products, decisions, and policies including the administration, governance, and implementation within the scope of the role.
