Job Summary: This position is-located in the Environmental Management Service, Textile Care Processing Section at New Mexico VA Healthcare Center, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Incumbent performs a variety of work in the operation of three laundry machine. This position has the ability of running one or a combination of tumblers, extractors, and conditioners.

Major Duties:

  • Duties of the position include but are not limited to: Incumbent is the Laundry Machine Operator/( Dryer) charged with the operation of a variety of laundry production equipment including the large dryers, small washers and dryers, garment finisher and textile finishing equipment, provides hand "folding and soiled linen sorting as required at the Textile Care Processing Facility (TCPF). Expected to display sound judgment in monitoring the work flow for textile processing tasks through communication with the linen clerk and laundry supervisor to determine and communicate linen needs to the washman in a timely manner. When performing the back up to the Laundry Machine Washman, must have a basic knowledge of the operating principles of commercial washing, and knowledge to select the correct wash formula from the provided chart for the selected wash load and basic knowledge of the operation for the cart wash, water and air systems to identify proper operation and procedure, to shut down the equipment if a malfunction occurs. Must be familiar with various chemical agents used by the TCPF to ensure they are properly used to prevent damage to linens, uniforms and any other textiles processed. Incumbent is cross-trained in all techniques and procedures used within the TCPF in the event of staffing shortages or unforeseen workload and works under strict timeframes and deadlines due to patient workload. Incumbent will be a back-up to the Washman, Laundry Worker, Sewing Machine Operator, Linen Clerks and Truck Driver as necessary. (Valid driver's license required if operating vehicle.) This position may be assigned holidays, irregular tours including weekends as necessary in support of Veteran Centered Care. Work Schedule: Full-Time, Varied daytime shifts. (Days off to be determined) Position Description Title/PD#: Laundry Machine Operator/PD50005A Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to stand and walk consistently, perform light to moderate bending and stooping, and able to wear PPE for extended period of time as dictated by the work setting. Some heavy movement of laundry carts weighing up to 700 pounds and use of conveyors are required. During normal day to day operations, individual will be required to perform simple grasping and fine hand manipulation, reaching above shoulder height and frequent stooping, bending, twisting arid kneeling. Position routinely requires that individual operate vehicles, electrical equipment-and push or pull soiled and clean laundry carts in and out of laundry truck, to and from loading docks to various locations within the TCPF and medical center.
