Job Description
The Large Complex Project EHS Manager is responsible for leading and managing all Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) initiatives on a large-scale construction project, driving a positive safety culture. This role requires proactive leadership, strategic vision, and hands-on engagement with project teams, trade partners, client, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance, continuous improvement, and the highest standards of safety performance.
Core Responsibilities:
Safety Leadership & Culture
- Champion the safety culture efforts, promoting a safe work environment across the project.
- Lead safety walks, document safety observations, and ensure regular safety inspections using platforms such as Hammertech.
- Stop unsafe work and enforce compliance with DPR’s EHSP and project-specific safety requirements.
- Recognize and publicly celebrate individuals and teams demonstrating exemplary safety practices.
- Grow EHS competencies in project team and EHS team members.
Project Execution & Oversight
- Implement Site-Specific Safety Plan and DPR’s EHSP.
- Participate in project-specific safety meetings, planning sessions, and staff meetings.
- Hold all site personnel accountable for safety compliance, coaching and correcting as needed.
- Utilize lessons learned from other projects to drive continuous improvement.
- Coordinate and conduct orientations, including High Risk Activities (HRA) training for all workers and trade partners.
- Ensure incident reporting procedures are followed, logs are updated, and root cause analyses are conducted for all incidents.
- Manage medical services and drug screening processes for the project.
Communication & Collaboration
- Maintain clear, proactive communication with project teams, trade partners, and leadership.
- Use established platforms for team coordination.
- Mentor and coach safety professionals, managers, and champions on site.
- Mediate between safety and field operations to resolve conflicts around safety requirements.
EHS Program Management
- Implement and manage DPR’s Environmental Health & Safety Plan (EHSP) for the project.
- Conduct hazard recognition, prevention, and mitigation activities, leveraging data and analytics to guide strategy.
- Prepare and facilitate trainings, emergency response drills, and ongoing safety education.
- Oversee documentation, ensuring all safety records, submittals, and training certifications are accurate and up to date.
Incident Response & Investigation
- Lead incident investigations, cause analyses, and corrective action implementation.
- Support claims management, collaborate with internal risk and insurance teams, as well as Owner Controlled Insurance Program (OCIP) carrier.
- Share incident results, lessons learned, and process improvements with project and regional leaders.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Drive innovation in safety tools, equipment, and work practices.
- Stay current on industry trends, regulatory changes, and DPR philosophies.
- Support specific EHS campaigns and initiatives.
- Foster a culture of support, recognition, and growth among all project team members.
Qualifications:
Required
- Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., CHST, CSP, CRIS, ARM).
- Expert knowledge of CAL-OSHA and other construction safety regulations.
- OSHA 500 Authorized Trainer.
- CPR/First Aid Certified (current).
- Minimum 10 years of construction EHS experience, including at least 7 years as a dedicated EHS professional managing project/regional programs.
- Proficiency in digital safety platforms (e.g., Hammertech, Microsoft Suite).
- Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to coach, mentor, and influence others in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in safety, environmental, occupational health, or related field.
- Fluent in English and Spanish.
- Experience managing EHS teams.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
- Spend time in the field; remaining time in project office collaborating on strategy.
- Navigate uneven working spaces, access heights, and work both indoors and outdoors with proper PPE.
- Occasional travel business unit offices as required.
- Sit, stand, bend, lift (minimum 25lbs), reach, and twist as needed.
Supervisory Responsibility
- Directly manage EHS professionals and report to the EHS Business Unit Lead and Project Leadership.

Anticipated starting pay range:
$126,000.00- $193,000.00
