System Engineers are responsible for partitioning and allocating product, feature and system functionality to implementation teams. Safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance are factors considered in system design with the goal of optimizing performance, design, testability, and deployability. System engineers identify use cases, define functional technical requirements, enable robust implementation designs, and ensure built-in quality with test definition and traceability.

Onsite

This position requires an employee to be on-site on a full-time basis.  Pontiac Campus. We will filling two positions, one first shift & one second shift.

We are seeking a self-motivated Lab System Integration Engineer to join our team focused on the dynamic laboratory environment in Pontiac.  The Lab System Integration Engineering (LSIE) team is a part of a Central Engineering Resource Team supporting various battery, component, and propulsion test laboratories as well as vehicle garages in Pontiac, Warren and Milford, Michigan.  In this role, you will be responsible for troubleshooting, supporting test direction, and resolving software issues in our engine test cells in Pontiac. You will need to be creative and take initiative, as well as use a high level of independent discernment to support our on-demand work ticket systems and projects.

We are looking for energetic individuals who are passionate about software, problem-solving, and innovation.  Individuals who are eager to take on challenges and support current technologies and methods for our operations.  We are primarily responsible for creating automated test scripts from testing methods and procedures along with integrating new test hardware/software into the test cells. The tests run by the lab directly affect the quality, durability, and performance of vehicles and related products developed by General Motors.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

You will be part of a team responsible for supporting engine, transmission, hybrid, and electrification development and validation testing in a laboratory environment.

  • Follow and support the GMS (Global Manufacturing System) through BPD (Business Plan Deployment)
  • Portraying GM Behaviors
  • Put Safety first in all that you do daily by 'Taking 2 for Safety'
  • Participating in Continuous Improvement opportunities as required.
  • Support Workday assignments from leadership
  • Follow GM Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) requirements.
  • Primarily requires supporting the laboratory equipment software used in testing through the on-demand work ticket systems
  • Work closely with product engineering teams to comprehend new product functionality to facilitate the development and implementation of methods for integration with test automation equipment and test scripts
  • Provide startup/debug troubleshooting support pertaining to the integration of test scripts, lab equipment, and products being tested
  • Design, program and troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Program closed loop pneumatic and servo hydraulic control systems
  • Multi-task and manage several projects in various states of execution, including the plan, design, build, setup, and test development changes.
  • Ensure test data generation, delivery, and storage methods are appropriate to meet or exceed quality standards and stakeholder expectations
  • Interface with vehicle controller networks and control electrical connections to lab hardware to ensure vehicle communications requirements are met
  • Support the lab’s physical networking capabilities by championing collaboration and projects with internal and external IT and test automation organizations
  • Maintain awareness of testing equipment and methods and evaluate them for adoption, championing innovative projects to integrate new technologies
  • Work in a collaborative, software release-oriented team atmosphere, actively participating in peer review of teammates’ test scripts and related projects
  • Identify and engage in continuous improvement projects aimed at maturing existing testing methods, including a push to increase efficiency while maintaining commonality across multiple test stands
  • Use independent judgment, however, can receive direct guidance from the supervisor or other lead.
  • Participate in solution of engineering related problems experienced in the laboratory (Root Cause)
  • Supports technical direction to support personnel
  • Communicate information to and from customer organizations and within the team
  • Support weekend and off shift needs as required 

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Associate’s degree in engineering or a Technical discipline (preferably Computer Engineering or Computer Science)
  • 3+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of programming languages (example: C, C++, C#, Java, Python, XML)
  • Ability to understand and utilize common networking protocols (example: TCP, UDP, IP, RS232, Ethernet, Modbus)
  • Demonstrate ability to work with a high level of autonomy in a complex environment, managing multiple projects by establishing priorities and deliverables with minimal supervision
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of design
  • Good oral and written communications skills
  • Working knowledge of Test Methods (GMW)
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
  • Working knowledge of automotive components and systems
  • Ability to work independently and with others
  • Proficient with MS Windows OS / networking, MS Office / Slack            

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology in STEM area (preferably Computer Engineering or Computer Science)
  • 5+ Years of relevant industry experience.
  • Proficient with programming languages (example: C, C++, C#, Java, Python, XML)
  • Ability to understand, utilize, and debug common networking protocols (example: CAN, LIN, TCP, UDP, IP, RS232, Ethernet, Modbus)
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills where issues can be unusual and difficult
  • Product development and/or testing experience
  • Experience with continuous integration testing
  • Experience with Agile Methodology and associated tools, (example: Jira, Bitbucket, Confluence)
  • Programming of test automation systems, (example: LabView, Test Stand, Veri-Stand)
  • Use of common automotive debug and data acquisition tools, (example: Vehicle Spy, INCA/MDA, Dewe-Soft)
  • Knowledge of traditional product development, validation and release timing, milestones and methodologies
  • Strong knowledge of dyno controls (AVL, Horiba), mechanical drives, power transmissions, fluid power / pneumatics, calibration software (ETAS - INCA)
  • Background with work ticket systems: Maximo, CTMS, JIRA
