The Role
Christie’s is a unique and exciting work environment for the right designer. A placement here offers an opportunity to work in a top-class museum environment that remakes itself on a weekly basis. The successful candidate will be multifaceted, demonstrating abilities in graphic design, environmental design, digital design, product display, and self-management. This position reports and will work closely with the Creative Director and Exhibition Design Director. We expect you to bring a good deal of experience and skill, but there is ample opportunity to learn on the job. Most importantly we are looking for a candidate that has a great attitude, an ability to adjust quickly, and self-drive.
There are physical requirements of this position. Christie’s is home to approximately 15 gallery spaces, and there are installs on a weekly basis. Some duties will include oversight of installations and install teams, replacing graphics in the galleries, maintenance and inventory of materials. Expect to interface with internal staff, outside vendors and internal contract workers.
The Christie’s brand is at the forefront of all projects, so the candidate must be able to follow brand guidelines and demonstrate an ability to understand the brand ethos, sufficient to design beyond the framework of the guidelines. Turnarounds are often tight, and many tasks need attention within a single day. The ability to shift focus quickly and multi-task on projects with varied timelines is critical. There may be last-minute changes to design requests, so the ability to problem-solve under pressure while maintaining a client-facing attitude is key. Efficiency, teamwork, and transparent communication are paramount to success at Christie’s.
Specific duties & responsibilities will include but are not limited to
Work directly with Creative Director and Exhibition Design Director to propose and manage all aspects of design projects as required.
Design various brand materials for print, digital or exhibition.
Design and supervise installation of signage. Develop timelines and punch lists for installation. Sourcing required materials.
Provide the vital support, both inside and outside the office, needed to maintain healthy supplier and employee relationships.
Forecast and manage budget for projects
Perform other duties as assigned by Manager
The Candidate
Must have Bachelor of Arts Degree in a field of design.
A minimum of 2 years of design experience in a professional setting.
Knowledge of graphic design, architectural and industrial design
Proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite, Vectorworks, SketchUp, or Figma a plus.
Knowledge of motion design to create animated gifs or simple video edits for social or window displays.
Knowledge of Presentation Software
Ability to learn Christie’s systems required for daily development of projects.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior written and spoken communication.
Must possess the ability to interact with staff on all levels in a professional, positive, and friendly manner.
Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
Ability to remain calm in stressful situations against pressure-driven timelines
Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize.
Flexible schedule and overtime needed during busy periods
Demonstrated ability to project manage, develop and coordinate complex schedules
Strong follow-up skills with attention to detail
Proactive attitude, knows how to take initiative and doesn’t hesitate to ask questions.
