Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Junior Cybersecurity & Software Engineer to support the design, implementation, and protection of secure software systems and networks. This position blends software engineering and cybersecurity disciplines and is ideal for an engineer with a strong academic foundation in Computer Science or Cybersecurity Engineering who is eager to apply secure coding, vulnerability management, and DevSecOps practices in a real-world environment.
Under the direction of senior cybersecurity and software engineers, the Junior Cybersecurity & Software Engineer will assist in developing and maintaining secure software, supporting system hardening and compliance documentation, and participating in Risk Management Framework (RMF) and Authorization to Operate (ATO) processes. This position provides a unique opportunity for an early-career engineer to develop professional expertise while contributing directly to mission-critical cybersecurity efforts.
Job Details:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in administering and securing computing systems that enforce security policies and audit controls across Windows, Linux, and Cisco environments.
- Participate in the preparation and maintenance of RMF accreditation packages, security documentation, and compliance artifacts.
- Support Security Test & Evaluation (ST&E) activities, risk assessments, and vulnerability remediation actions.
- Analyze network, event, and security logs to identify potential threats or misconfigurations under supervision of senior engineers.
- Contribute to secure software development initiatives using programming languages such as Python, Go, Java, and C++, ensuring adherence to secure coding standards.
- Support DevSecOps pipelines leveraging tools such as JIRA, Bitbucket, Jenkins, and Git for automated testing, configuration management, and version control.
- Assist in responses to external audits, penetration tests, and vulnerability assessments, tracking and documenting mitigation efforts.
- Research and apply cybersecurity policies, standards, and frameworks including DISA STIGs, IAVMs, and NIST 800-53.
- Provide hands-on support for foundational cybersecurity technologies such as SIEMs, IDS/IPS, malware protection, logical access controls, and vulnerability scanners (training provided).
- Participate in continuous process improvement and incident response preparation activities.
Minimum Job Requirements
Education:
Four-year college degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity Engineering, or a closely related technical field (required). Master’s degree in cybersecurity engineering preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 1–3 years of combined academic, research, or professional experience in software development and information security (may include internships or academic projects).
- Foundational understanding of Risk Management Framework (RMF), Authorization to Operate (ATO) processes, and compliance documentation.
- Experience analyzing network traffic, event logs, or IDS/IPS alerts.
- Familiarity with system administration tasks and basic network configuration in Windows or Linux environments.
- Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple technical tasks simultaneously.
- Proven analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills applied with a solution-focused approach.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to produce clear and accurate technical documentation.
- Excellent teamwork skills and the ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary engineering environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with DevSecOps tools such as JIRA, Bitbucket, Jenkins, or similar CI/CD platforms.
- Exposure to vulnerability management, security scanning tools, or SIEM solutions (e.g., OpenVAS, Splunk, Wireshark).
- Experience with machine learning, AI-driven analysis, or data security concepts.
- Working knowledge of NIST, DoD, or ISO 27001 security frameworks.
- Interest in pursuing professional certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CEH, or CISSP.
