What you'll do:
As an IT Manager III, you'll serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in multiple functional areas/domains on system processes and data structures that support multiple technology disciplines. In this role you'll manage teams and deliver complex projects in designated domain(s) or functional area(s) to maintain the security posture on time and on budget. Additionally, this role will collaborate with internal business partners to proactively address ongoing customer needs and ensure rapid resolution to open issues. In this role you will foster a collaborative environment with focus on continuous improvement and delivery of working software. As IT Manager III, you'll also participate in strategic and tactical planning for the delivery of Cyber products and services as well as evaluating technology and set standards. Working in this role, you'll recommend improvements to established business processes while continuing to deliver high value in execution. You'll create and deliver on comprehensive project plans, remove any impediments, and track overall project performance to analyze the successful completion of business short-term and long-term goals.
As the Enterprise Data Engineering Manager, you are accountable to lead a team of data engineers in implementing an enterprise data platform in accordance with the strategic data and analytics needs of Western Alliance Bank. This challenging role requires you to integrate data management and technology knowledge to develop a cross-business unit data tier that can be leveraged in new and innovative ways to improve our products and deliver insights. Utilizing strong critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills, you develop relationships across the organization that enable and advance the data strategy in support of our company’s growth trajectory. This is aligned with the data engineering and platform needs for Western Alliance Bank Regulatory Reporting, including Large Financial Institution requirements.
As the Enterprise Data Engineering Manager, you lead, empower, and contribute to a high-performing centralized team of Data Engineers and partnered with Data Analysts and QA Engineers. Your team builds solutions to satisfy the complete data lifecycle management for our enterprise data platforms, including data controls for data governance and data quality monitoring. You are a player coach who provides management, product ownership and hands-on contributions to the team’s solutions. You must demonstrate strong technical mastery as well as an aptitude for business subject matter expertise and the impact the data solutions carry. To be successful, you collaborate with architects, product managers, and business and technical stakeholders to deliver and support enterprise data solutions. You are the champion for growing the data engineering discipline across the IT delivery organization. Your team of full-time and professional services staff consists of 8-12 of data professionals who rely on you for direct accountability for their development and productivity.
- Implement safety procedures and data recovery plans. Develop user manuals, as well as policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
- Partner with IT Leadership in the creation of a plan for employee development, retention, resource planning, talent management, performance management, and achieve a diverse and engaged workforce as well as recruit, train, and evaluate staff member’s work.
- Work with IT Leadership in the preparation and management of the annual budget, business cases, execution plans, operating plans for the team and resources required to achieve established program priorities.
- Ensure adequate risk management and security processes/controls are established and maintained in alignment with the risk appetite for the Bank, as well as applicable regulatory and enterprise risk management expectations.
- Implement data engineering best practices across the full data lifecycle including efficient technical hygiene and the use of Azure DevOps for the tactical implementation of the Western Alliance Bank data strategy and roadmap.
- Integrate data governance and data quality controls into the data pipelines and data lifecycle.
- Apply Test Driven Development Methodology to all data engineering solutions.
- Ensure data engineers adhere to published architecture patterns and specifications.
- Serve as the product owner for team including the oversight that agile stories are well formed and meet required acceptance criteria.
- Provide resolution to production incidents related to the data platform as required.
- Provide administrative management for a team of 8-12 data professionals.
- Conducts frequent coaching with individual engineers on team to guide their professional development.
- Matures the Western Alliance Bank data platforms and ecosystems through architectural principles and standards in tight collaboration with engineering and business line leadership.
- Champions Data Governance through non-functional requirements in all data solutions.
- Effectively communicates progress, issues, obstacles and success across business and technology stakeholders.
- Commits to and demonstrates built-in quality and compliance by design in all data solutions.
- Contributes to the strategy vision for the enterprise data and analytics strategy.
What you'll need:
- 7+ years’ experience with data engineering specifically in Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) concepts and processes, enterprise data warehouse capabilities, database principles, and other related tools and technologies; preferably strong to expert in Azure Data Factory and Databricks.
- 5+ years’ experience designing, implementing, and supporting cloud data solutions; Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Services, Azure Synapse, and Azure DevOps.
- 3+ years’ experience leading teams or highly complex data projects of cross-functional team.
- 2 years’ experience working with structured and unstructured data using Big Data Technologies
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
- Previous leadership experience required.
- Intermediate knowledge of general Financial Services or Banking is preferred.
- Intermediate knowledge of applicable regulatory and legal compliance obligations, rules and regulations, industry standards and practices.
- Expert level experience with at least one RDBMS and query language such as T-SQL, PL/SQL, Spark SQL.
- Certifications within Azure such as Azure Fundamentals, Azure Data Engineer, Azure Data Scientist, and/or Azure DevOps Engineer.
- Understanding of strategic and new and emerging technology trends, and the practical application of existing, new, and emerging technologies to new and evolving business and operating models.
- Experience in Agile, SAFe, and/or Scrum – preferred.
- Experience integrating with data quality, data catalog and data lineage tools – preferred.
- Additional Cloud Data certifications with any major cloud provides (Azure, AWS, GCP) -preferred.
- Familiarity with analytics solutions and data science capabilities – preferred.
- Intermediate to advanced experience in managing technology teams within a specific functional area while ensuring the highest quality delivery of complex products or services.
- Intermediate to advanced experience with the execution KPIs and timelines with proven ability to analyze a variety of data and summarize findings in applicable reports or other communication mediums. Utilize data to identify areas of improvement and opportunities for growth by collaborating with business and tech leads.
- Advanced speaking and writing communication skills.
- May require up to 25% travel.
