Job Description:
A vacancy for an Intern for Advanced flow-field measurements in a weapon bay cavity (d/m/f) has arisen within Airbus Defence and Space in Manching. The successful applicant will join “Wind Tunnel Tests MAN” within the Aerodynamics domain.
Aerodynamics is responsible for the aerodynamic design and characterization for all military aircraft programs along their product life cycle. We use numerical simulations, wind tunnel testing and flight test to understand the aerodynamic behavior and to create and deliver aircraft representative aerodynamic data and models for stability & control, performance, loads and aeroelastics. The wind tunnel test team I particular is responsible for planning and conducting all wind tunnel tests associated with the Manching product portfolio.
Project description:
Advanced military aircraft carry weapons and stores in internal bay due performance and low-observability requirements. The airflow around the bay during deployment is complex and subject to unsteady phenomena. The unsteady aerodynamic loads can become critical for the acoustic and structural response, and affect the weapon release. Therefore, detailed understanding of the flow features is essential for the design and validation of weapon bays.
The goal of this project is to contribute to a wind-tunnel experiment on a generic cavity model, representative of a weapon bay. Advanced measurement techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Hot Wire Anemometry (HWA) can be employed to measure time-accurate velocity data. The experiment will provide insights on the flow physics and capabilities of the measurement techniques, and contribute to the validation of numerical simulations carried out in the design phase.
Your main tasks and responsibilities:
The project will have a duration of 12 weeks, during which the following activities and milestones are planned:
Literature review on cavity flow Experiment planning and preparation Definition of requirements Definition of test program Model design, update and preparation If possible, support the experiment execution Data analysis and synthesis
