Under the general direction of the Director of International Student Services, the International Student Advisor will provide high-quality immigration guidance to international students and promote their full participation and integration into the university community. This position is called upon to interpret internal university policies interfacing with federal immigration regulations affecting international students at LSU, and will share the student workload with the student advising team. This position plays an integral role at LSU by providing high-level advising for international students.
Job Responsibilities
International Student Advising (70%)
Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State’s reporting requirements impacting international students.
Counsel international students, university staff, and faculty on a broad range of immigration and intercultural issues.
Advise international students in person or virtually on personal, academic, career, social, and cultural matters.
Assist with meeting the ongoing reporting and compliance requirements of immigration regulations using the SEVIS and Sunapsis systems.
In collaboration with other departments and external organizations, assist with providing services and support for international students and their families.
Share the document and request processing workload with advisors in ISS.
Remain current on relevant immigration regulations and policies impacting the international student populations at LSU.
Assist with the preparation and delivery of workshops, presentations, and other programming related to immigration services for international students and scholars.
LSU Global Advising and Support (25%)
Serve as the primary point of contact for LSU Global students and staff.
Represent ISS in LSU Global meetings related to international students in the program.
Monitor new LSU Global students’ initial semester arrival, enrollment, and credit hour status in the LSU system.
Work with the Director of ISS to streamline the administrative responsibilities related to LSU Global and ensure a smooth working relationship with the program.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
Assist with other duties as assigned by the Director of International Student Services.
Additional Requirements
FERPA - As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health-related matter, they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students, or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
Additional Information
As mandated by federal regulations, U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residence is required to be a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for approval to access Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and thereby perform the duties of this position.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and 1-2 years working with international students in a university setting.
Specific Experience:
General understanding of other U.S. immigration laws and classifications
Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office
Technical ability to interface with student information systems such as Workday for students and Sunapsis

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree and 2-4 years of experience advising F-1 and J-1 international students
Specific Experience:
Strong knowledge of government regulations pertaining to relevant status categories (e.g., F-1, J-1), and familiarity with other immigration classifications
Previous experience with technology functions of an office interfacing directly with international students
