We are seeking a talented individual to join our Trustee Office team at Mercer Super. This role can be based in Sydney or Melbourne. This is a hybrid role that has a requirement of working at least three days a week in the office.

Insurance Governance Leader

Reporting to the Trustee Office Leader, this position is responsible for leading the management of Mercer Super’s adherence to the insurance governance regulatory framework in respect of the Mercer Super Trust.

The importance of good insurance governance, including management of conflicts of interest, across Mercer Super’s large and complex insurance structure and arrangements is instrumental to maintaining the reputation of Mercer Super and its superannuation funds, as well as protecting and promoting the best financial interests of members.

We will count on you to:

Oversee Mercer Super’s adherence with the insurance governance regulatory framework across Mercer Super, particularly as it relates to SPS 250 and CPS 230, but also including;

  • Determining insurance agenda items for Board and Committee meetings, in conjunction with Group Secretariat, Mercer Super insurance product managers and other management staff. Review insurance-related meeting papers/presentations to proactively ensure alignment with the insurance-related policies of Mercer Super and regulatory requirements
  • Be accountable for all compliance sign-offs related to Mercer Super’s adherence to its insurance governance obligations
  • Be accountable for liaising with Line 1 and Line 2 Risk & Compliance, internal audit and external auditors on insurance matters as they relate to Mercer Super’s trustee obligations, ensuring that all queries are fully and adequately addressed
  • Represent Mercer Super as a key stakeholder in the internal audit and APRA regulator reviews of Mercer Super's insurance management frameworks, providing written material for and attending sessions with these parties.
  • Manage the assessment, approval and revie of Mercer Super's claims delegates.

Oversee Mercer Super's claims management and delegation functions including:

  • Oversee the claims assessment processes: disability claims analysis, application of ICA remedies by insurers, distribution of death benefits, identification of any gaps or inconsistencies in insurer's decisions and challenge insurer's decisions where in the best financial interests of members;
  • Ensure all Mercer Super Claims Delegates are appropriately skilled and experienced to discharge their delegate responsibilities and ensure they maintain knowledge of insurers' policy documentation and relevant trust deed provisions, relevant AFCA determinations and case law.
  • Oversee the quarterly reviews of all insurance manager reporting, considering matters such as compliance attestations, due diligence reviews and service level performance against metrics set out in the insurance policies and Service Agreements. Escalate any issues of concern to the Trustee Office Leader and other stakeholders as relevant.

What you need to have:

  • Minimum of 10 years relevant superannuation industry experience, including at least 5 years relevant experience in a financial services role with a group insurance focus, and preferably experience in a governance role
  • Experience in a client servicing/consulting role is also desirable
  • Excellent working knowledge of a trustee’s role and responsibilities, and the superannuation regulatory framework
  • Detailed knowledge of claims management and assessment and understating of superannuation and insurance legislation and current issues
  • Highly organised, with the ability to manage a role involved in multiple projects and conflicting deadlines successfully, and with a particular emphasis on being able to apply project management techniques to do so
  • Strong stakeholder management and negotiation skills
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to communicate in writing clearly and effectively
  • Sound judgement and ability to make appropriate, timely decisions
  • Self-motivated, taking a professional attitude to meeting deadlines and adhering to documented work standards, and able to work autonomously
  • Ability to handle potential conflicts associated with related party relationships
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to express complex ideas simply
