Maersk is looking for an Inland First Mile Agent to join our team in Cape Town – Belcon, supporting our mission to simplify global supply chains and deliver world-class service to our customers.

Key Responsibilities:


Coordination & Scheduling
•    Plan and schedule rail movements in line with customer requirements and available rail capacity.
•    Liaise with Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) and port terminals (DCT, City Deep, CTCT, NCT) to secure train slots and manage turnaround times.
•    Prepare rail plans with TFR and the Customer Service team.


Documentation & Compliance
•    Prepare and verify rail and customs documentation.
•    Ensure full compliance with Transnet business rules and Maersk standards.


Cargo Tracking & Monitoring
•    Track rail movements and provide customers with real-time cargo status updates.
•    Resolve delays, diversions, and operational disruptions in collaboration with rail and port stakeholders.


Customer Service & Communication
•    Act as the main liaison between depots, cold stores, and Transnet Freight Rail.
•    Communicate proactively on rail schedules, transit times, and delivery challenges.
•    Understand customers’ business needs to propose practical logistics solutions.
•    Attend or coordinate calls to address customer concerns and review corridor performance.


Operational Efficiency
•    Optimize rail wagon usage and train slots to reduce cost and improve turnaround time.
•    Support initiatives to convert cargo movement from road to rail.
•    Maintain on-time delivery performance in line with customer expectations.
•    Drive back-of-port utilization, reefer rail volumes, and cold store operations.


Problem Solving & Exception Management
•    Manage incidents such as congestion or missed connections and escalate where necessary.
•    Identify service failures, process gaps, and recurring issues to drive continuous improvement.
•    Champion operational excellence across inland logistics operations.


Who We’re Looking For
•    Minimum 3 years of rail or intermodal operations experience.
•    Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
•    Results-oriented, with a strong sense of urgency and ownership.
•    Analytical thinker with the ability to identify inefficiencies and implement solutions.
•    Skilled at multitasking and working effectively under pressure.
•    Team player with a collaborative, solutions-driven mindset.
•    Proficient to advanced Microsoft Excel and reporting skills.
•    Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

The Inland First Mile Agent plays a key role in ensuring the smooth, reliable, and efficient movement of goods by rail, supporting South Africa’s logistics and supply chain network. This role is crucial to reducing port congestion, minimizing road dependency, and enhancing the intermodal transport system in line with Maersk’s long-term logistics strategy.
