Job Summary: This position supports a variety of specialties within the Specialty Care Clinics by acting independently or with supervision from a licensed health care professional if necessary, to perform clinical and administrative duties.

Major Duties:

  • As a Health Technician (Office Automation), you will: Responsible for assessing Veterans and documenting findings in the electronic health record Ensure procedures and instruct Veteran to adjust clothing/accessories as required for examination Assist with examinations, treatments, and procedures Make appropriate referral and consultation for provide review Assess walk-in patients that request medical care or services and direct them appropriately Provide health education and information to include verbal instruction, review written education materials, direct to access other education resources Respond to patients by phone, secure messaging or in-person resolving issue or triaging to appropriate team member Safely transport patients to emergency and/or other departments Ensure exam rooms are stocked and clean Ensure proper disposal of contaminated waste and disposable items Inspect, clean, and disinfect all instruments and equipment and report equipment problems Coordinate consultation requests to include instructing the patient on the consultation process, requisition of consultant's records and tracking to assure consultations are made timely and completed as well as requesting renewal of consultation May coordinate discharge from hospital and schedule follow-up appointments May administer medication within the scope of VHA Directive 2010-028 Answer telephone calls to clinic and process telephone call to appropriate service Receive, review, record, sort, and deliver all incoming mail and other correspondence Receive requests from professional, technical and administrative personnel, searches files and locates materials, furnishes them to requestor Reappoint, cancel, and reschedule appointments as needed Mail out appointment reminders and no-show letters, document in CPRS Manage clinic schedule of all Specialists to include nurse clinic and ancillary providers determining the best time to work in same day patients Requisition medical records (laboratory, diagnostic reports and progress notes) and complete release of information forms. Prepare forms requested by patients requiring provider signature. May enter work orders for maintenance May order supplies for clinic as needed May process billing inquiries by either referring to agency cashier or utilization management; or research inquiry an contact vendor and patient May complete travel authorizations and track authorization May train students from medical assistant programs May train new hire health technicians to maximize effectiveness of equipment and system use May assist in completion of patient visit encounters May assist with timekeeping and payroll Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 07:30am to 4pm Telework: This position may be authorized for telework. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/23/2025. Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) You must possess one of the following: Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health professionals such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. OR Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. In addition to the IOR, you must also certify your skill in Typing at least 40-words per minute. In addition to the IOR & Typing Proficiency, you must also meet one of the Minimum Qualification Requirements described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience includes: Performing medical and diagnostic examinations by assisting with duties such as measuring and monitoring vital signs, collecting biometrics, preparing and positioning the patient and provides general clerical /administrative support coordination. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
