Who we are looking for

The Senior Vice President (SVP) and Head of Legal, Global Information Technology and Procurement is responsible for providing informed and commercially practical legal counsel to State Street’s executive leadership in developing, adopting and implementing new and evolving technologies, protecting and ensuring resilient technology systems, structuring and managing critical third-party relationships and maintaining compliance with increasingly stringent regulatory frameworks globally.  This responsibility includes incorporating strategic and tactical legal advice into State Street’s plans and practices to maintain information security, meet client expectations, engage and manage vendor relationships, execute acquisitions and complex technology-based strategic alliances and protect intellectual property.

The role reports the Executive Vice President and Global Head of Corporate and Regulatory Legal and has managerial responsibility for approximately 8 experienced technology licensing lawyers globally (including matrix managerial responsibility outside of the U.S.).

What you will be responsible for

As the SVP and Head of Legal, Global Information Technology and Procurement, you will:

  • Counsel the internal development of, and licensing or acquisition of third party, new and evolving technologies, including protection of proprietary and confidential information, compliance with third party intellectual property rights, internal governance, resiliency and sensitivity to regulatory frameworks globally

  • Structure, negotiate, execute and implement critical technology and vendor relationships, including outsourcings, licensing arrangements, joint ventures and other strategic alliances, optimizing commercial opportunities for State Street while understanding, mitigating and internally communicating related risks

  • Advise on maintaining effective continuing engagement, communication and oversight regarding technology and vendor relationships, implementation of associated governance processes and management of related disputes and claims

  • Protect State Street’s intellectual property assets, including by implementing responsible practices in connection with system and product development activities, and State Street’s reputation

  • Proactively identify, understand and communicate relevant information technology trends, and related legal developments, and their potential benefits or threats to State Street’s operations

  • Monitor, maintain expertise in and counsel pragmatic implementation of regulatory standards and expectations for a global systemically important financial institution, including balancing potentially differing legal and regulatory requirements in multiple jurisdictions

  • Advance and optimize Legal Department and corporate practices (e.g., vendor contracting, due diligence, IP protection) to a promote an environment of continuing simplification, process improvement and efficiency

  • Leverage subject matter and legal expertise and visibility into State Street’s global objectives to provide proactive professional challenge and suggest solutions for both business lines and corporate functions to achieve risk sensitive and balanced outcomes that meet business goals, taking into account the entire State Street organization

  • Manage outside counsel and other expenses, supporting departmental strategic development, goal-setting and reporting and ensuring timely reporting of relevant risks, developments and events to department leadership

  • Effectively collaborate with and influence diverse multi-disciplinary teams of varying levels of experience within business units, governance forums, other business and corporate legal groups, and IT, compliance, risk and other corporate functions to execute complex projects with urgency, efficiency and risk excellence

  • Engage, develop and manage a talented group of ~8 attorneys globally

  • Identify and implement innovative or alternative business processes intended to maximize productivity of Legal Department and corporate resources

  • Have the capacity and presence to represent State Street in industry groups, mindful of maintaining advocacy for State Street’s strategic goals

  • Develop and manage outside counsel relationships, including budgets, and reduce reliance on outside counsel to efficiently and cost-effectively achieve business objectives

Education & Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant expertise in information technology licensing, development of technology partnerships and alliances, intellectual property and related laws and industry practices

  • Substantial experience and responsibility in contractual negotiations over a wide variety of technology, IP, licensing, service provider and other matters

  • Superior communication, client service, drafting and writing skills, attention and fiduciary sensibility

  • Experience and ability to excel, individually and collaboratively, in a multidisciplinary, highly regulated environment, communicating with various levels in a large, global firm

  • Minimum 12 years of related work experience

  • Juris Doctorate and bar admission

  • Flexibility and an eagerness to learn

Salary Range:

$225,000 - $337,500 Annual

The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
