About the Role

The Respiratory Scientist (Grade 1) will be responsible for provide technical expertise and commitment to quality patient care, while demonstrating high standards of laboratory measurement and patient care.

  • Performing routine and some more complex respiratory function testing
  • Be involved in the conduct of an effective quality assurance program.
  • Participate in training, education and professional development programs for staff.

Classifications for this position will range from RX1 – RX7 ($63,674 - $91,785 per annum pro rata)

Your Contribution

  • Bachelor of Applied Science, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts (Psychology major) or Bachelor of Nursing is essential
  • Previous experience in a customer/ patient focused environment is desirable
  • Previous experience with Lung Function Tests (desirable).
  • Current Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check, or willing to obtain

LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Respiratory Laboratory at St Vincent’s Hospital (Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine) provides a comprehensive service in all aspects of the investigation and management of respiratory and sleep disorders, including the full range of lung function testing.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Grade 1 Respiratory Scientist is responsible for providing high quality clinical service, maintain and promote the professional standards of respiratory physiology and lung function measurement.

POSITION DUTIES

The Respiratory Scientist (Grade 1) will be responsible for providing technical expertise and commitment to quality patient care.

Responsibility Area 1: Lung Function Standards

  • Ability to perform routine and complex lung function tests according to international standards.
  • Maintain clinical documentation, records and data.
  • Maintain quality assurance programs, ensure accurate calibration and maintenance of equipment, troubleshooting technical issues.

Responsibility Area 2: Quality Improvement

  • Review systems and processes and provide continuous improvement in laboratory processes to meet best practice standards.

SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL REGISTRATION, LICENSE OR QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Applied Science or equivalent qualification.

OTHER ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience in performing Lung Function Tests
    • Spirometry, DLCO, Lung Volumes, Maximum Respiratory Pressures, FeNO, Bronchial provocation Test, 6mwt.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant Quality Control for each test.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Effectively work autonomously and within a multi-disciplinary team
    • Facilitate team outcomes in a multidisciplinary environment
    • Assist and support change and implement process improvements
    • Communicate effectively, with patients and staff at all levels and have courteous phone manner
    • Utilise written and verbal communication skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, and negotiation
    • Prioritise tasks and meet deadlines
    • Utilise a computer and demonstrate basic knowledge of Microsoft applications

OTHER NON-ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Certified Respiratory Function Scientist with the Australian and New Zealand Society of Respiratory Science (ANZSRS).
  • Registration with the Australian and New Zealand Society of Respiratory Science (ANZSRS)
