Founding Engineer (Swift + Design)

Pally is an AI unified messaging inbox and personal CRM. We bring together all your chats and all your pals, and use on-device AI to help you prioritize, stay in touch, and reach inbox zero everywhere.

To be truly personal, AI needs to know everything about us — every conversation, and every relationship. But this is private data. No one wants to send it to OpenAI. That’s why we believe that the future of personal AI is private, on-device, and proactive — just how we’re building Pally.

We’re backed by some of the best founders and investors in the world: Y Combinator, the cofounders of Hugging Face, Slack, and Ramp, and a few other unannounced legends.

Role

We’re hiring for a founding design engineer with deep experience working with Swift.

You’ll work on our native MacOS and iOS applications. You will take full ownership of our front-end applications, including architecture, networking, and ui.

You will be design-focused and pixel-perfect. You see yourself as an artist, and want to build the most beautiful, usable software in the world.

The role will span beyond the traditional bounds of engineering… As an early hire you will be expected to take shared overall ownership of the product, speak to users, and ensure an incredible user experience. We’re in this together; we win as a team and lose as a team.

Tech Stack

With our local-first and privacy-first architecture, the majority of our codebase is written in Swift, with SwiftData as our main database. We do have a small backend written in Golang which deals with enrichment of contacts, but otherwise no user data is stored in our backend.

We use and fine-tune on-device models for specific AI use cases.

We use the latest SwiftUI patterns and MVVM architecture.

Profile

You could be the right fit if you’re a top-tier product and design-minded Swift engineer with founding/startup experience. You must have at least a few years of Swift experience, to a senior or staff level.

We don’t care about traditional ‘credentials’, we care about grit. You will be an outlier with a demonstrated track record of achieving greatness and overcoming exceptionally hard problems.

As for values: you believe relationships are everything. You care about the people you work with. You give more than you take. You take artistic pride in everything you do. You know that ‘good enough’ is not good enough.

Practical Stuff

In-person, in San Francisco, starting ASAP.

We work exceptionally hard. You should expect a minimum of 60-80 hours per week. If work isn’t your primary focus, this isn’t for you. You need to be all-in.

This being said, we stand by our belief that relationships are everything. That means your family and friends as well. You will be there for your family and friends when they need you, and you will find time to achieve your work goals around that. We don’t care when you work exceptionally hard, only that you do. Your schedule is up to you.

We have a preference for someone to move into the ‘Pally House’ with us and live with us in the early days, but understand this may not be possible for everyone and it will not rule anyone out (as long as you can be in person at least 5 days a week).
