The Mellon College of Science (MCS) is home to four departments and many programs and research centers that cross disciplines. We approach scientific problems from fresh angles using creative interdisciplinary approaches while drawing on our departmental strengths in the core sciences. MCS faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their research in a variety of fields, including polymer science, cosmology, mathematical finance, and neuroscience.

We are seeking a detail-oriented Financial Analyst to join the team! The Financial Analyst will be responsible for the collection, compilation, interpretation, and analysis of internal and external financial data in order to support College-wide budgeting and strategic operational decisions. In addition, this role will be responsible for producing and presenting documentation and interpretative reports based on statistical and financial analyses.

Core Responsibilities:

Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Routinely analyze financial data and provide clear, interpretive results on a wide array of matters, both routine and ad hoc.
  • Maintain and monitor accounts related to the MCS Dean’s Office in support of the College’s financial planning process; provide similar support for departmental accounts as needed.
  • Perform forecasting and scenario modeling to inform strategic decision-making and resource allocation.
  • Develop reports and assist in preparing planning and analysis presentations for senior leadership.
  • Conduct analysis of enrollment and undergraduate teaching data, endowment draws, storeroom activities, and recharges.
  • Oversee MCS Dean’s Office Sponsored Research portfolio; ensure budgets are accurate, spending aligns with program expectations, and payroll for faculty, staff and students on grants is set up and maintained correctly. 

Financial Transaction Processing

  • Process journal entries, purchase orders, invoices, transfers, Oracle EPM entries, and other finance-related transactions, both routine and ad hoc.
  • Review ledger detail and resolve accounting problems using University procedures, including payroll distribution adjustments, AP redistributions, and feeder correction forms.
  • Retain financial records in compliance with the University Financial Record Retention policy and maintain alignment with the College’s electronic organizational structure.

Process Development & Improvement

  • Execute key College financial processes with accuracy and consistency, contributing directly to the effectiveness of the College’s financial planning process.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, transparency, and internal controls within financial operations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Dean’s Office, MCS departments, and central administration to design, test, implement, and document process enhancements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or related field required.
  • One to three years of financial analysis experience required.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
