Job Description
The Financial Accountant provides professional accounting support to the Chief Financial Officer by maintaining accurate and timely financial records for Old Mutual Eswatini companies. The role ensures the integrity of financial reporting, compliance with applicable standards (IFRS 17, IFRS 9, IFRS 16), and adherence to Old Mutual Group financial control frameworks. It involves preparing reconciliations, journal entries, trial balances, management reports, and supporting audits and regulatory submissions. The incumbent contributes to the financial health of the business by ensuring reliable information for decision-making, governance, and stakeholder confidence.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities will include amongst others the following:
Financial Management and Control
- Prepare and post journal entries, reconciliations, and trial balances for month-end and year-end close.
- Maintain integrity of general ledger accounts and ensure accurate financial classification.
- Reconcile bank, suspense, and intercompany accounts and investigate variances.
- Support the CFO in expense analysis, accruals, and fixed asset accounting.
Financial Reporting and Compliance
- Prepare management accounts and supporting schedules within agreed timelines.
- Assist in preparation of IFRS 17 and IFRS 9 reporting inputs for actuarial and group teams.
- Support quarterly and annual statutory returns to FSRA, tax authorities, and Old Mutual Group.
- Prepare audit packs and respond to internal and external audit queries.
Budgeting and Cost Management
- Assist with annual budgets and quarterly forecasts.
- Track and analyse expenses against budgets and provide commentary.
- Support identification of process and cost efficiency opportunities.
Systems and Data Management
- Maintain accuracy of financial data in financials and other systems.
- Support system upgrades, interfaces, and automation initiatives.
Governance and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with financial control procedures, Delegation of Authority, and Procurement Policy.
- Adhere to all internal and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Promptly escalate control weaknesses or irregularities to the CFO.
Stakeholder Support
- Provide accurate and timely information to internal and external stakeholders.
- Liaise with auditors, Group Finance, and local regulators on accounting matters.
Operational Compliance
- Maintain and renew a deep knowledge and understanding of the organization's policies and procedures and of relevant regulatory codes and codes of conduct, and ensure own work adheres to required standards.
- Or identify, within the team, patterns of noncompliance with the organization's policies and procedures and with relevant regulatory codes and codes of conduct, taking appropriate action to report and resolve these and escalating issues as appropriate.
Personal Capability Building
- Develop own capabilities by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching; gain or maintain external professional accreditation, where relevant, to improve performance and fulfil personal potential.
- Maintain an in-depth understanding of technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.
Qualifications and Experience required
Specific skills & experience required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Studying toward a professional qualification (ACCA, CIMA, CA, or equivalent).
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in financial accounting or audit, preferably in insurance or financial services.
- Strong understanding of IFRS and financial control principles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ERP systems.
- Knowledge of IFRS 17 and IFRS 9 reporting advantageous.
