Federal Work-Study: Laboratory Assistant - Fikrig Lab

The Fikrig Lab studies mosquito biology and ecology through field and laboratory research. We are seeking a motivated Work Study Laboratory Assistant to support day-to-day lab operations, organization, and data management. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a research environment while applying and strengthening your organizational skills.
 

Responsibilities may include:

  • Organizing and labeling laboratory materials and supplies

  • Cleaning laboratory surfaces, glassware, and equipment used in mosquito rearing

  • Removing outdated materials and supplies from the former lab space (the Fikrig Lab is newly established)

  • Performing basic data entry tasks

  • Assisting with mosquito colony maintenance

  • Supporting other lab-related tasks as needed

Preferred qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail

  • Self-motivated and reliable with a positive attitude

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel

  • Interest in laboratory work (no prior experience required)

  • Bonus: Proficiency in Spanish—some data may be in Spanish from fieldwork in Peru (helpful but not required)

Additional opportunities:
Students with an interest in entomology or biology may have the chance to participate in research activities beyond the core responsibilities listed above (with expanded hours).

The starting hourly rate for this job is $12.00.

 

 

Federal Work Study job performance is evaluated either annually or through ongoing mentorship.
