What you will do

In this vital role the Executive Director, Security Architecture and Engineering is responsible for setting the strategic vision and leading several of Amgen’s security and protection capabilities across core domains — including network, cloud, data, software, endpoint, mobile and AI. This individual will be accountable for defining and executing a strategic security architecture and engineering roadmap, ensuring trust in Amgen’s digital backbone, and delivering a secure, resilient, and compliant foundation that enables Amgen’s continued growth and innovation at scale.
This leader will direct a global team and will ensure high-performing day-to-day operations while driving transformative initiatives such as AI security/protection, Zero Trust Network deployment, and next-generation data and mobile security. The role requires deep technical expertise in cybersecurity engineering domains as well as relevant frameworks (NIST, ISO, CIS, HIPAA, GDPR, GxP) and the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders across functions, including AI & Data, and several other enterprise teams.
The ideal candidate has experience delivering enterprise-scale security engineering programs, managing global teams, and fostering innovation in highly regulated environments, driving initiatives that protect and strengthen digital trust and resilience across Amgen. This role requires strategic vision, operational discipline, and ability to influence at the executive level.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Defining Strategy – Establish and direct the enterprise Security Architecture and Engineering strategy and multi-year roadmap, ensuring alignment with Amgen’s digital trust vision and business priorities across all protection domains (network, cloud, data, endpoint, mobile, AI, and software).
Designing Architecture – Set the architectural vision and governance model for secure integration across enterprise technology platforms and digital initiatives, driving consistency, scalability, and resilience.
Delivering Capabilities – Lead the engineering, implementation, and operation of protection technologies—including Zero Trust and AI security—ensuring delivery to strategic milestones.
Ensuring Compliance – Oversee adherence to global regulatory, audit, and framework requirements (NIST, ISO, HIPAA, GDPR, GxP, 21 CFR Part 11), embedding compliance into design principles.
Managing Operations – Direct global teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and high-performing security services underpinned by measurable SLAs and KPIs.
Collaborating with Stakeholders – Partner closely with CDT, Infrastructure, AI/Data, and enterprise business leaders to embed security and trust into Amgen’s digital ecosystem and innovation agenda.
Allocating Resources – Drive investment and resource prioritization across architecture and engineering programs to maximize business impact and risk reduction.
Developing Talent – Build, mentor, and retain a diverse global workforce of architects and engineers, cultivating next-generation leadership and deep domain expertise.

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree & 6 years of cybersecurity experience OR
Master’s degree & 10 years of cybersecurity experience OR
Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of cybersecurity experience AND
6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources
Preferred Qualifications:
Expertise in security architecture, engineering, and operations across cloud, data, network, endpoint, mobile, and AI domains
Experience leading large, distributed teams as well as developing and retaining talent
Collaboration and influence skills to partner across cyber, infrastructure, Data & AI, and business functions
Ability to manage multi-million-dollar budgets and optimize spend
Experience in biotech, pharmaceutical, or other highly regulated industries
Professional certifications such as CISSP, CCSP, CISM
Familiarity with Zero Trust maturity models and AI/ML security frameworks
Strategic Thinking: Defines long-term architecture strategy and anticipates emerging threats
Transparent Decision-Making: Balances risk, compliance, and business needs in security investment choices
Adaptive Leadership: Leads global teams through complex change in fast-moving digital environments.
