Role Overview:

The Executive Director of Finance for Capital Portfolio Planning & Performance Management is a strategic finance leader responsible for driving financial rigor, transparency, and alignment across the organization’s capital investments. This role leads the development and execution of business cases, ensures benefits are clearly documented and tracked, and fosters a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. The Executive Director partners closely with financial and business leaders to ensure capital portfolio decisions support strategic imperatives and deliver measurable value. Additionally, this role is responsible for developing talent, standardizing processes, and elevating the storytelling and reporting of portfolio performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Capital Portfolio Strategy & Planning
    • Lead the development and execution of capital portfolio planning aligned with enterprise strategic priorities.
    • Ensure robust financial analysis and benefit modeling underpin all investment decisions.
  • Business Case Development & Benefits Realization
    • Establish and enforce standards for business case development, including financial rigor, risk assessment, and benefit quantification.
    • Oversee documentation and tracking of expected benefits to ensure realization and accountability.
  • Performance Management & Reporting
    • Design and implement standardized reporting frameworks to monitor portfolio performance.
    • Develop compelling financial narratives and visualizations to communicate insights to senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
    • Serve as a key liaison between Finance and business units to ensure transparency and alignment.
    • Facilitate regular portfolio reviews and strategic discussions with a broad audience of capital partners (finance, business, & DDAT)
  • Process Standardization & Governance
    • Create and maintain standardized processes and documentation for capital planning, approvals, and performance tracking.
    • Implement governance structures to ensure consistency, compliance, and continuous improvement.
  • Talent Development & Leadership
    • Build and mentor a high-performing finance team with expertise in capital planning and performance management.
    • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Strategic Alignment
    • Ensure capital investments are aligned with long-term strategic goals and deliver sustainable value.
    • Partner with Strategy, Operations, and other key functions to integrate financial planning with enterprise objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in corporate finance, capital planning, or financial performance management.
  • Proven experience leading cross-functional financial planning and analysis (FP&A) initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of capital investment evaluation, business case development, and benefit realization frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights.
  • Proficiency in financial modeling, portfolio reporting tools, and enterprise performance management systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Finance, Business Administration (MBA), or related discipline.
  • CPA, CFA, or other relevant professional certification.
  • Experience in a large, matrixed organization with complex capital portfolios.
  • Familiarity with strategic planning processes and enterprise-level investment governance.
  • Expertise in process improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) and change management.
  • Track record of driving standardization and automation in financial reporting and documentation.
  • Experience presenting to executive leadership and board-level stakeholders.

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$131,500.00 - $303,195.00


This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls.  The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors.  This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.  This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
