About the Role

Based at our Clarendon Clinic in East Melbourne, which has the benefit of being centrally located and close to multiple public transport and cycle routes, this is a great opportunity to increase your skills in community mental health. You will provide a high standard of clinical assessment, treatment and secondary consultation to clients and staff of the St. Vincent’s integrated adult MHS, demonstrating excellence in discipline specific and recovery-focused skills.

You will join a dynamic community mental health team working alongside allied health and nursing case managers operating under a recovery-oriented model of care, utilising the Strengths Model.

  • Work alongside Case managers to provide support to consumers within the Strengths Model of recovery orientated practice
  • Build a therapeutic alliance with the consumer and actively engage them in the planning and delivery of their care
  • Undertake assessments, devise treatment plans and deliver targeted psychological interventions to consumers with complex mental health related needs in line with SVMH policies and strategic direction

Classifications for this position will range from

  • Psychologist Grade 2 PK1 - PK4 ($94,478- $106,906 per annum pro rata)

Your Contribution

  • Masters or Doctorate degree in Psychology and current General Registration as a Psychologist with AHPRA
  • Has Clinical Psychology endorsement, or working towards clinical endorsement as a Registrar
  • Experience working within the public community mental health field
  • Experience in the provision of assessment, discipline specific intervention to consumers with a serious mental illness and complex needs within a recovery framework
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Current National criminal history check, or willing to obtain

LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT

St. Vincent’s Mental Health (SVMH) includes an adult area mental health service for the inner-city areas of Yarra and Boroondara.  The adult mental health service components are: Footbridge Community Care Unit (CCU), a 44 bed Acute Inpatient Service (AIS) located on the St. Vincent’s Hospital site, the North Fitzroy PARC and two community mental health services (CMHS) at Hawthorn and East Melbourne (Clarendon CMHS). Community mental health services comprise the Community Acute Response Team (CART, Triage and Crisis assessment and Treatment Service (CATS), Extended Triage (ET), Emergency Department Mental Health (EDMH), PACER, Police support and HOPE (Suicide Prevention). Other services include Continuing Care (CCT), STAY Housing Support, Mobile Support and Treatment (MST) and Homeless Outreach (CHOPS) services.  A Consultation & Liaison Service is provided to the health service. NEXUS Dual Diagnosis Service and the Body Image and Eating Disorders Assessment and Treatment Service (BETRS) are regional services. Statewide services are the Victorian Dual Disability Service and the Victorian Transcultural Mental Health. The Acute Inpatient Service includes 5 beds designated as the Koori State-wide Inpatient Service and linked to the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Clarendon Continuing Care Team provides ongoing specialist treatment and support to meet the identified needs of clients who suffer with a serious mental illness and associated high level of disability in the City of Yarra.  Intervention includes a range of clinical and therapeutic interventions using the ‘Strengths’ model of individual case management. 

Under the guidance of the Team Manager and Team Consultant Psychiatrist, and in conjunction with team members the Enhanced Care Clinician will provide and coordinate short to medium term additional specialist, targeted therapeutic interventions to consumers that are receiving case management services.  Interventions provided could include, but are not limited to, tapered assertive engagement and support to boost consumer autonomy and accessibility, formulation-driven evidence-based psychotherapy (e.g., ACT, DBT, CBT), providing a comprehensive range of psychological assessments including diagnostic and personality assessments, family therapy, peer support, interventions focused on activity/vocation undertaking risk assessment and safety planning for high risk consumers (e.g. developing service-wide management plans to co-ordinate crisis responses), additional treatment interventions to help formulate and meet holistic physical health or dual diagnosis needs.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Work within the Strengths Model of recovery orientated practice.
  • Build a therapeutic alliance with identified consumers and actively engage them in the planning, and delivery of their care.
  • In collaboration with the treating team, undertake the assessment, coordination and provision of treatment and delivery of targeted evidence-based interventions to identified consumers with complex mental health related needs in line with SVMH policies and strategic direction.
  • Utilise discipline-specific skills as appropriate and as required by consumers, their family/carers and the Service.
  • Assist in the provision of primary, secondary and tertiary consultation services.
  • Display active participation in professional development and ongoing learning opportunities.
  • Attend and participate in discipline specific meetings and display a commitment to attending discipline specific training.
  • Work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ensure all reporting information is coordinated and completed as required.
  • Maintain all documentation in line with SVMH policies, including clinical documentation, outcome measures and CMI reporting

SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL REGISTRATION, LICENSE OR QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Registration as a General Psychologist with AHPRA. Practice endorsement as a Clinical Psychologist, or eligibility to enter a Clinical Psychology registrar program with the Psychology Board of Australia
  • Bachelor Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Bachelor Degree in Social Work,
  • Division 3 or Division 1 Nurse with Psychiatric Endorsement from the Nurses Board of Victoria.
  • Registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (all disciplines except Social Work)
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification in mental health
  • Social Workers - An approved degree in Social Work and eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers
  • Current Victorian driver’s license

  • Well-developed understanding of quality improvement and evidence of implementation and evaluation of quality improvement activities.
  • Experience in the development of treatment plans and the application of evidence based therapeutic interventions for people with major mental health disorders.
  • Demonstrated ability in working as part of the multi-disciplinary clinical team in promoting a standard of excellence in clinical practice.  This includes contributing to team clinical processes such as Clinical Review and supervision for staff and students     
  • A comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of the Mental Health & Wellbeing Act 2022 (including amendments) and other relevant legislation

Psychology

  • Knowledge of and commitment to providing a comprehensive range of psychological assessments including diagnostic, cognitive and personality assessments for people with serious mental illness and complex needs
  • Experience in the development and application of evidence based therapeutic interventions for people with major mental health disorders
  • Comprehensive understanding of the theories of human behaviour and psychopathology and their application in clinical practice
  • Comprehensive understanding of the theories of human behaviour and psychopathology and their application in clinical practice.
  • Experience providing schema therapy, ACT, DBT and other best practice therapy for consumers 

Occupational Therapy

  • Knowledge of and commitment to providing a comprehensive range of occupational therapy assessments and interventions for people with serious mental illness and complex needs, and their carers 
  • Understanding of evidenced based practice and models of occupational therapy (including the Model of Human Occupation) and their application in clinical practice
  • Knowledge of sensory modulation theory and intervention
  • Knowledge of the specific assessments including the MOHO Assessments and Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS).

Nursing

  • Knowledge of appropriate medication and administration management including relevant legislation
  • Ability to apply nursing models and processes
  • Awareness of infection control techniques.

Social Work

  • Knowledge of and commitment to providing a comprehensive range of social work assessment and intervention services for people with serious mental illness and complex needs
  • Demonstrate knowledge of family and social system assessments with the ability to identify gaps and facilitate access to appropriate resources.

OTHER NON-ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-graduate qualifications in relevant area of specialty or in the process of achieving the same are desirable.
