Deutsche Bank

Engineering Director (f/m/x)

Bucharest Full time

Job Description:

DB Global Technology is Deutsche Bank’s technology centre in Central and Eastern Europe. Since its set-up in 2013, Bucharest Technology Centre (BEX) has constantly proven its capacity to deliver global technology products and services, playing a dynamic role in the Bank’s technology transformation.

We have a robust, hands-on engineering culture dedicated to continuous learning, knowledge-sharing, technical skill development and networking. We are an essential part of the Bank’s technology platform and develop applications for many important business areas.

We are seeking a visionary Engineering Director to lead the modernization of our Treasury technology landscape. In this role, you will drive the architectural direction, design, and delivery of scalable solutions that integrate both legacy systems and modern technologies. You will oversee the transformation of critical Treasury platforms, ensuring they leverage the best of GCP and on-premises solutions while maintaining stability and performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the modernization of legacy Treasury systems, including core treasury platforms, processing engines, risk management tools, and reconciliation systems.
  • Design and architect applications using GCP-native services (e.g., Kubernetes, Cloud Run, BigQuery, Pub/Sub) and on-premises solutions, with a focus on microservices, event-driven architectures, and hybrid cloud strategies.
  • Bridge the gap between older technologies (e.g., mainframe systems, SCALA) and modern stacks (e.g., Java/Spring Boot, Python, Kafka, and containerized deployments).
  • Collaborate with business and technology stakeholders to align Treasury’s technical roadmap with strategic objectives, ensuring scalability, security, and compliance.
  • Champion engineering excellence, including DevOps practices, QA Automation, CI/CD pipelines, and observability, to accelerate delivery and reduce technical debt.
  • Mentor and grow high-performing engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Drive the adoption of cloud-native and hybrid architectures, balancing cost, performance, and risk.

Skills:

  • 12+ years of software engineering experience, with 7+ years in a leadership role (e.g., Engineering Director) in financial services (Treasury or IB will be a plus).
  • Deep expertise in GCP and on-premises infrastructure, with a track record of designing and implementing microservices-based applications.
  • Hands-on experience modernizing legacy Treasury systems (e.g., payment hubs, liquidity management, or trade finance platforms) while ensuring backward compatibility.
  • Strong background in distributed systems, APIs, and real-time data processing, with familiarity in both cloud and traditional environments.
  • Experience leading large-scale migrations, integrations, or greenfield projects in Treasury or related financial domains.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence technical and business stakeholders.
