Position Summary:

As an EHS Specialist, your primary focus will be on protecting our associates, the environment, and our facility from harm. You will establish systems and provide leadership for the identification and monitoring of environmental hazards and workplace safety risks through the analysis of environmental activities, work processes, materials, waste, equipment, and the work habits of employees. You will be responsible for identifying potential or actual areas of non-compliance through audits or inspections and ensuring appropriate corrective and preventive action is taken. Additionally, you will facilitate the integration of our EHS standards and develop, implement, and improve written EHS programs based on OSHA and EPA regulations, Thermo Fisher Scientific corporate standards, and best management practices.

Location: Maplewood, MN

Hours: Day Shift, Monday - Friday

Key Responsibilities:

In this role, your key responsibilities will include:

Ensuring a safe working environment for the R&D labs and office colleagues by implementing OSHA, EPA, Corporate, and site safety policies and requirements.

Completing environmental reporting, creating and maintaining waste profiles, and driving compliance activities as required under air, water, and waste permits.

Completing job safety and ergonomic analysis, making recommendations, and working with management to implement changes when necessary.

Assisting lab users with concerns or designs to ensure safe and environmentally compliant operations, and facilities teams with job scoping and planning.

Conducting site inspections for environmental and safety compliance. Assisting in safety committees and awareness programs.

Developing and delivering training programs. Advising on hazard communication and SDS programs.

Supporting hazard identification and equipment commissioning during Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs), lab risk assessments, and lab safety audits.

Coordinating emergency preparedness drills and collaborating with the site’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) to develop appropriate responses. Actively participating in the ERT as EHS representative.

Qualifications:

Education:

Education requirement: High School Diploma or G.E.D. required. Equivalent experience in a technical field (chemistry, biology, environmental, safety, etc.) with training in core Environmental, Health and Safety discipline is also acceptable.

Experience:

5+ years of experience in safety or environmental field in a lab or manufacturing environment, preferred. 1+ yrs of experience in local, state, and federal environmental, health, and safety regulatory compliance, preferred. Experience with physical, chemical, and viral laboratory environments as well as pilot-scale equipment, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exercise judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Good technical and project management skills with the ability to successfully manage multiple projects and daily responsibilities.
  • Good verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to develop and foster creative and innovative solutions.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of employees.
  • Ability to discern and appropriately communicate sensitive issues.
  • Physical demand lifting 50 to 70 pounds and being able to move 55-gallon drums with drum carts.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in Minnesota is $60,000.00–$90,000.00.
