Director, PDM Business Process & Operational Excellence 

Location: Foster City 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Reporting to the Senior Director, Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing (PDM) Business Process & Operational Excellence (OpEx), and part of the larger PDM organization, the Director, Business Processes & OpEx will support the success of PDM by leading cross-functional business process mapping, identifying improvements to existing business processes and leading Operational Excellence (OpEx) initiatives that span multiple PDM functions; OpEx initiatives at individual manufacturing sites are not in scope. Success in this role depends on being able to utilize the tools & training associated with business process management in a strategic capacity to drive continuous improvement and innovation in Chemistry, Manufacturing and Control (CMC).   

 

FOCUS AREAS 

  • Lead cross-functional business process mapping and OpEx initiatives. This requires exceptional facilitation skills to gather SME input to design clear end-to-end business processes that are practical and meaningfully improve current processes / approaches, in addition to expertise in business process and OpEx methodologies and tools 

  • Ability to analyze situations and/or data, applying sound judgment and reasoning, to identify and resolve problems and make recommendations. These will typically be high impact processes that have implications across multiple PDM functions 

  • Ensure initiatives are set for success to deliver on time and within budget with appropriate stakeholder management 

  • Proactively identify and drive continuous improvement and innovation opportunities across PDM 

  • Interface with members of the PDM Extended Leadership Team to drive meaningful process improvements in PDM  

  • Utilize excellent analytical, communication and influencing skills, as well as a keen problem-solving ability, to drive helpful change and continuous improvement 

  • Mentor and influence PDM lean enthusiasts as a trainer for lean methodologies and member of the wider PDM Operational Excellence community. 

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • A degree in life sciences or a relevant business area with 12+ years of varied post-graduation experience in Pharmaceuticals, Biosciences or a related industry. Or MS with 10+ years of relevant experience. Or PhD with 8+ years of relevant experience. 

  • Blackbelt in Lean and/or Six Sigma 

  • Expertise in 1+ areas of Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls 

  • Experience leading cross-functional biopharma strategic initiatives

  • Experience in design and leading business process mapping kaizens with a variety of stakeholders and SMEs

  • Experience with business process mapping tools such as Signavio and/or Visio

  • Strong interpersonal skills, change management and conflict resolution skills  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Solid understanding of current industry trends and application of insights into day to day work 

  • Demonstrated ability to understand complex and complicated situations and to strip out complications 

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with all levels within the organization 

  • Outstanding stakeholder management/service for a wide variety of services and facilitation needs.  

  • Enthusiastic and experienced in change management with a growth mindset approach 

  • Proactive in educational growth and best practices in the areas of Operational Excellence, Innovation with ability to train, mentor, influence and inspire others to amplify growth. 


 

The salary range for this position is: $226,185.00 - $292,710.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
